More August Weekend Farewell Activities: Cacapon

Cacapon State Park activities featuring Vernal Pools, Monarchs, and Micro-vision worlds are some of the many weekend activities August 28-31, 2023. These activities and others are conducted or begin at the nature center unless noted. Open to the public and free to attend unless indicated.

The nature center is open daily from 9:30AM – 4:30PM and closes during planned programs/presentations or noted in the daily schedule.

MONDAY, August 28, 2023

10:00AM Tai Chi
This class will help increase balance, flexibility, and focus on connection to mind, body, & spirit. Location is at Cacapon Lodge.

SPECIAL PROGRAM
10:00AM Vernal Pool Survey
Learn all about vernal pools and what types of amphibians live there. These surveys help multiple agencies throughout the region: WV DNR, WV DEP, WV Watershed Improvement Branch, US Forest Service and USGS Amphibian and Monitoring Initiative. Learn how to be a citizen scientist and report your findings on inaturalist. Homeschool families may find this as a good educational opportunity. YPP

Learn the importance of spiders and how we are all connected in the web of life. YPP

2:30PM Bug Bingo
Learn some cool bug facts while playing this game.

10:00AM Bat Talk
Learn all about bats, why they are important and how we can help them! How many insects can one bat consume on any given evening? YPP

1:00PM Monarch Life Cycle
Watch a video on the four stages of a monarch’s life. Firsthand discover our nature center monarchs in different life stages. It is so cool to watch a film and then go see our live stage. YPP

WEDNESDAY, August 30, 2023

9:00AM Ridge Trail
Join park volunteers and Potomac Valley Master Naturalists on this 1.5 moderate hike learning about the park’s natural and cultural history. A great way to start your morning.

10:00AM Nature Center Garden Tour
Walk in our native plant and pollinator garden that is an official monarch waystation on monarchwatch.org Learn how to grow your own! YPP

1:00PM Be a Citizen Scientist
Did you know that you can help the monarch migration by reporting your sightings of Monarch butterflies to journey.north.org? We report them here at the park and so can you! YPP

THURSDAY, August 3, 2023

10:00AM Micro-vision World
Come explore our park from a microscopic point of view. We’ll go on a small trek looking at plants & animals through magnifying glasses, a stereomicroscope for items collected and look at prepared slides in a compound slides. YPP

1:00PM Full Blue Moon
This is the second full moon in August. Learn about the moon cycle and enjoy an activity. YPP

Come and visit the Tom Ambrose Nature Center! The nature center is a great stop for all ages, showcasing exhibits on the park history and the Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC) Camp Morgan 1934-41. Other West Virginia natural exhibits include an extensive taxidermy
collection of wildlife- fish, birds, fox, bobcat, mountain lion, deer, elk, and eastern grey wolf!

Also, hands-on sand displays for wildlife tracks and a new geology interactive map to design your own mountains, rivers and lakes. Take a park naturalist guided hike or join the daily
activities!
