August Weekend Farewell Activities: Cacapon

Cacapon State Park activities featuring Irish Road Bowling, a night hike, and Connecting Cultures art program are some of the many weekend activities August 25 – 27, 2023. These activities and others are conducted or begin at the nature center unless noted. Open to the public and free to attend unless indicated.

The nature center is open daily from 9:30AM – 4:30PM and closes during planned programs/presentations or noted in the daily schedule.

FRIDAY, August 25, 2023

10:00AM Nature Center Garden Tour
Walk in our native plant and pollinator garden that is an official monarch waystation on monarchwatch.org Learn how to grow your own! YPP

1:00PM WV Clouds Look up!
What type of cloud do you see? Join seasonal naturalists to learn about some common clouds and what weather they may be predicting. YPP

2:00PM Turkey Talk
Learn the differences between hens and gobblers and some other fun facts! YPP

4:00-6:00PM Welcome to Cacapon!
Meet the Park Naturalist at the lodge to answer any general park questions you may have or find out what amazing recreation and nature activities Cacapon has to offer. Welcome to Cacapon Resort State Park!

7:00PM Evening Stroll
Meet park volunteer and Potomac Valley Master Naturalist to take in a peaceful Cacapon
evening. Meet at the lodge front desk.

SATURDAY, August 26, 2023

10:00AM Intro to Geocaching in the Park
Are you looking for a family adventure? Join us for an introduction to geocaching! We’ll teach you a little bit about it and then set out on an adventure to find some geocaches in the park. YPP

SPECIAL ART / CRAFT PROGRAM
1PM-3:30PM Connecting Cultures with Colors and Pressed Yarn
Join the Morgan Arts Council MACreate South instructor led program. Learn how to press, cut, shape and thread yarn into intricate brightly colored designs on flat waxed wooden surfaces. You’ll take your original creation home. This is an indoor program workshop with plenty of parking, seating and creature comforts. Tuition is $35 registration and found online at macicehouse.org

1:30PM Stream Study
Discover what makes a stream healthy and what unlikely critters may be hiding in plain sight! You may want to bring shoes to get wet. YPP

7:00PM Irish Road Bowling
Enjoy an evening of bowling at the nature center! If you haven’t tried this sport, come out and see what it is all about. Check it out on WV.IRB.COM .

7:30PM-9PM Night Hike
Meet at the front desk of the lodge. Take in the Cacapon’s nightlife around the upper reservoir. Look up at the night sky with binoculars & a telescope.

SUNDAY, August 27, 2023
Nature Center Open 11AM-4:30PM*

9:30AM Beginner Birding Walk
Enjoy the morning melodies along the Piney Ridge Trail. Learn some fun birding tips and helpful tools to identify birds by sight and sound. Meet at the lodge front desk. YPP

1:00PM Weed Warriors
Come help battle the park’s non-native invasive plants! Learn about Japanese Barberry, Oriental Bittersweet, and Japanese Stilt grass. Join this interpretive walk and help pull some plants along the way. Groups interested in helping with our ongoing invasion removals should talk with Park Naturalist Valerie Chaney.

Come and visit the Tom Ambrose Nature Center! The nature center is a great stop for all ages, showcasing exhibits on the park history and the Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC) Camp Morgan 1934-41. Other West Virginia natural exhibits include an extensive taxidermy
collection of wildlife- fish, birds, fox, bobcat, mountain lion, deer, elk, and eastern grey wolf!

Also, hands-on sand displays for wildlife tracks and a new geology interactive map to design your own mountains, rivers and lakes. Take a park naturalist guided hike or join the daily
activities!
