Weekend Activities at Blackwater Falls

Friday, January 14, 2022
10:30 a.m. Nature Journaling
It’s an introduction into recording your thoughts, emotions, ideas and observations through words and drawings. A journal is available to purchase for $3.00 or use paper provided by the naturalist. YPP

12:30 p.m. Make a Deer Track Craft
Use plaster of Paris in a mold to create a lasting memory of your visit to Blackwater Falls while enjoying a film about deer.
About 1 hour. YPP

2:00 p.m. Life in the Cold Hike
For many wild animals, winter is a difficult time. Vegetation, cold temperatures and deep snow. make survival a challenge during winter. How does wildlife live in wintery months? Join the park naturalist, Paulita and Madelene, at the
trailhead of Elakala Trail to learn and discuss how animals and plants survive the cold. YPP

10:00 a.m. Spruce Bogs & Berries
Let’s meet at the trailhead of Gentle Trail for this fun yet educational walk along Yellow
Birch Trail. 70 minutes. About 1 mile. YPP

11:15 a.m. Twisted Tie Dye
COLORED SHIRTS
Join our crafty gal at the nature center to get creative with a colored souvenir shirt and dye. Black or Purple
shirts available. Available Sizes limited. Adult sizes: $10.00, Youth Sizes: $8.00. Tie-dye station set up until 1:15 p.m.

1:30 p.m. Friendship Bracelet Craft

2:00 p.m. Slithering Snakes
How many snakes call West Virginia home? What is the state reptile of West Virginia? Discover the answer to these questions and more in the program presented by the park naturalist. Live Eastern Rat Snake highlighted during program. About one hour. YPP

Herb Garden & Medicinal Plants
Let’s learn about some medicinal plants while making a herb garden for your kitchen at home. Craft Fee: $3.00. YPP

11:30 a.m.
Let’s learn to make a Candle
Join the staff to follow the process of creating a candle. Supplies limited to first come basis. Craft fee: $3.00

1:30 p.m.
Dig It!
Winter is a fine time for beginners to learn about the geology of the park and “The “Mountain State” of West Virginia.
Participants will have an opportunity to be a paleontologist and take home their own fossil find. Craft fee: $3.00 YPP

3:30 p.m.
Bust n’ Boom Campfire
Join park naturalist, Paulita Cousin, to hear of the area history, perhaps sing a song and enjoy a tasty treat. About 1 hour. YPP

5:30 p.m.
Yips, Hoots and Howls Walk
Join the park naturalist Paulita and Madelene, at the Blackwater Falls Campground office building to explore the park on a nearly full moon night. With snow around, the early evening program is more inspiring. You will also learn about some animals that mate in the winter. Please, leave the flashlight in your pocket for this program. Easy walking. About 1 hour. YPP

The Nature Center is open from 10:00 a.m. until 2:00 p.m. daily Wednesday through Friday and until 3:00 p.m. Saturday – Monday and closed on Tuesday.

All activities meet at Harold Walters Nature unless indicated.
