Turtles, Tye dye, Penny stoves: Bluestone

From lightning bugs, bubbles, fishing and more, weekends at Bluestone State Park are extra special with activities that focus on the outdoors and nature pursuits. Join park naturalist and heritage craftsman Jonathan Lipscomb July 29-31, 2023 at these planned activities.

SATURDAY, July 29, 2023
Noon Match rockets
How do rockets work? Meet at the picnic shelter to make match rockets and learn the basics on how rockets work. *ypp

2-3pm Turtle talk
WVs only land turtle is the box turtle. Join the naturalist at the pines behind the events building to learn about turtles and other reptiles that make their home at Bluestone State Park. *ypp

6-8pm Tye dye
One of a kind! We’ll be at the swimming pool to create a one of a kind souvenir. Shirts are $10 for a park shirt, $5 if you bring your own.

8:30-10pm Moth and Lightning bug survey
Shine little glow worm, also known as fireflies and lightning bugs. Join Naturalist Jonathan behind the events building to learn about the nocturnal insects that call Bluestone State park home. These are creatures that are only out at night. Maybe a Luna moth or different species of fireflies with greet us. All ages welcome. Family friendly. *ypp

SUNDAY, July 30, 2023
9am Bird watching
Birding basics. Meet at the shelter behind the activities building for a relaxing morning of bird watching. If you know birds really well, come on! If you are just getting interested in birds, come on! *ypp

10am Nature Hike
Learn about the local flora and fauna with a hike along the cabin and rhododendron trail. We will meet in front of the events building for this 1.5 mile hike.

1-3pm giant bubbles
We will be making giant bubbles behind the events building. This activity is a hit with all ages. If the weather is cooperative, some wind but not too much wind and the humidity is right, we can make bubbles that are Goliath’s. Maybe even share a little science and the bubble recipe.

6-8pm Tye dye
Join me at the pool to create a one of a kind souvenir. shirts are $10 for a park shirt, $5 if you bring your own.

MONDAY, July 31, 2023
9am Fishing
A relaxing morning fishing and learning about different types of fishing equipment at the fishing pier meets at 9:00am below the Bluestone State Park office. Bring your own equipment or borrow one of ours All ages are welcome to join, although ages 15 up require a license which can be found at wvfish.com *ypp

1-3pm Giant bubbles/Chalk art/Water rockets
Outdoor activity trifecta! Making giant bubbles, chalk art, and shooting water rockets will be at the Meador Campground bathhouse. This is fun for all ages. Join us.

3:30pm Penny stoves
Learn how to make a penny stove using old soda cans at the picnic shelter. Those wishing to make a stove need to bring two empty soda cans. All ages welcome. *ypp

*ypp are young people for parks programs. These programs are focused on fun education for ages 6-16. Although, all ages are welcome to attend.

** All children under 12 must be accompanied by an adult
