Stepping Out into September : Cacapon

Time to step out and find Cacapon State Park activities September 1 – 4 2023. From clouds and snakes to moths, owls and geology activities and crafts are conducted or begin at the nature center unless noted. Open to the public and free to attend unless indicated. All ages welcomed.

The nature center is open daily from 9:30AM – 4:30PM and closes during planned programs or presentations or noted in the daily schedule.

FRIDAY, September 1, 2023

10:00AM Nature Garden Journaling
Create your own nature journal and discover how fun it is to draw, color, or sketch about your favorite things in nature! YPP

1:00PM WV Clouds Look up!
What type of cloud do you see? Join seasonal naturalists to learn about some common clouds. YPP

2:30PM WV Snakes
Learn helpful ways to tell if a snake is venomous or non-venomous. Learn some fun facts about common WV snakes. (No Live Snakes in program) YPP

4:00-6:00PM Welcome to Cacapon!
Meet the Park Naturalist at the lodge to answer any general park questions you may have or find out what amazing recreation and nature activities Cacapon has to offer. Welcome to Cacapon Resort State Park! Interested in creating a pollinator zone at your home? Ask Valerie the naturalist.

7:00PM Evening Stroll
Meet park volunteer and Potomac Valley Master Naturalist to take in a peaceful Cacapon evening. Meet at the lodge front desk.

8:00PM Cacapon Campfire
Join us for the end of season campfire! Get ready for some campfire songs and Marshmallows.

SATURDAY, September 2, 2023

10:00AM Monarch Life Cycle
Watch a video on the four stages of a monarch’s life. Firsthand discover our nature center monarchs in different life stages. YPP

11:30AM Knot-tying
Learn some helpful tips on tying knots for camping or while in the outdoors. YPP

2:00PM Cacapon Tie-Dye
Make & take home your own tie-dye shirt. Purchase Cacapon State Park T-shirt here at the nature center for $10

3:00PM Water Balloon Challenge
Following the tie-dye program get ready for a fun family and friend challenge. Oh boy!

8PM-9:30PM Moth Madness & Glowsticks on the Game Court
Get your glow stick necklaces and bracelets! Enjoy LED corn hole, badminton, & volleyball. During this time a moth study will be held too. We have so much fun at this activity. So much fun! Location: Tennis Courts.

10:00AM Geology Hike
Discover Cacapon’s geology along the Piney Ridge Trail. Meet at lodge. YPP

1:00PM Knot-tying

2:30PM WV Owls
Join in this interactive PowerPoint program to learn WV’s owls by sight and sound. Then dissect an owl pellet! Yes! see the bits of bone, etc. that an owl dines on. YPP

9:00AM Morning Melodies Discover
Cacapon’s common birds and woodpeckers along the Piney Ridge Trail. Binoculars provided. YPP

When you have time – find these activities at the Nature Center.
Crafting
Beads and Bracelets Drop by the nature center during open hours to make your own bracelet.

Self-guided Activities at the Nature Center
Learn all about the box turtle and black bear while playing these fun games at your own pace.

Come and visit the Tom Ambrose Nature Center! The nature center is a great stop for all ages, showcasing exhibits on the park history and the Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC) Camp Morgan 1934-41. Other West Virginia natural exhibits include an extensive taxidermy collection of wildlife- fish, birds, fox, bobcat, mountain lion, deer, elk, and eastern grey wolf!

Also, hands-on sand displays for wildlife tracks and a new geology interactive map to design your own mountains, rivers and lakes. Take a park naturalist guided hike or join the daily
activities!
