November Spirit. Part 2: Cacapon

November Spirit: Part 2 includes a great 3-hour program on November 18 presented by Morgan County Master Gardeners. Native plant specialist Joyce Morningstar discusses native and invasive plants. Licensed tree expert and Master of Forestry, Shawn Walker

Stop at the Cacapon Nature Center. It is a great place for all ages, showcasing exhibits on the park’s history. Visit daily from 9:30AM – 4:30PM. All activities and programs start at the nature center unless noted. Visit us for November Spirit, Park 2 from November 11-18, 2023 at Cacapon Resort State Park.

Hike Meet at the front desk of the lodge for a hike along the Piney Ridge trail. Binoculars provided.

1:00PM Non-native Invasive Plants
Come help battle the park’s non-native invasive plants! Learn about Japanese Barberry, Oriental Bittersweet, and Japanese Stilt grass. Join this interpretive walk and help pull some plants along the way.

10:00AM The CCC Boys: A West Virginia Legacy
The CCC boys left a legacy that can still be enjoyed all over WV in the forests they planted and parks they helped to build. (30 min film)

11:00AM-1:30PM Art with Ari
Join local artist and park volunteer to learn how to paint the four basic clouds on canvas: Atmospheric Art. This class is for all ages, and same day walk-ins. $5 Class fee. [This is such an awesome activity. Hope to see you at the Nature Center for Art with Ari]

10:00AM Powerful Porcupine
Porcupines have more defenses and strengths than just their quills. Come learn some porcupine facts, watch a quick video and share any encounters you have had with porcupines. Fact or Myth? Porcupines shoot their quills. Are there porcupines at Cacapon? Attend this program to find out.

1:30PM Twigs and Bark ID
Learn all about Cacapon’s common trees through a variety of twig and tree bark samples.

SPECIAL PROGRAM
10AM A Gardenside Chat
Special presentation on native plant and tree identification and care, presented by Morgan County Master Gardeners. Native plant specialist Joyce Morningstar, owner of Stareagle Gardens will discuss native and invasive plants. Licensed tree expert and Master of Forestry, Shawn Walker, will discuss tree identification fundamentals. An interactive three hours of indoor and outdoor presentation at the nature center. If you enjoy gardening, yarding, tree care or learning more about native plants, this is a great opportunity. Fee free. Restrooms. Ample parking.

1:30PM Contour Lines and Map Reading
With the help of our 3D interactive sand display, learn the basics of map reading.

At the Nature Center.
West Virginia natural exhibits include an extensive taxidermy collection of wildlife- fish, birds, fox, bobcat, mountain lion, deer, elk, and eastern grey wolf! Also, hands-on sand displays for wildlife tracks and a new geology interactive map to design your own mountains, rivers and lakes.
