Mid-July Nature Invites You: Pipestem
July 17, 2023 – July 20, 2023
Pipestem Resort sits on the east rim of the Bluestone River Gorge, which carves through the plateau to the scenic Bluestone River 1,200 feet below. Visit the Nature Center which is open Wednesday – Sunday 11:00 am – 5:00 pm. See our exhibits and heritage structures, and sit a spell in our West Virginia made rocking chairs, listen to the outside birds inside, or attend activities planned July 17 – 20, 2023.
MONDAY, July 17, 2023
1:00 pm Nature Center Open House- Stop by the Nature Center to meet Bryce and have a tour of our Nature Center and Historic Structures. YPP
2:00 pm Lake Dip- Meet Bryce at the pedestrian bridge near McKeever to walk to a nearby lake to see what critters we might catch. YPP
4:00 pm Ultimate Frisbee- Meet Bryce at the Campground store to learn how to play Ultimate Frisbee. Ultimate is a team sport which mixes elements of football, basketball, and rugby, substituting the ball with a flying disc (frisbee) and the referee with spirit of the game.
TUESDAY, July 18, 2023
11:00 am Turtle Talk- Meet Kristen at the activities shelter behind the Nature Center to learn about
turtles and what you can do to help them in the wild. Great for ages young and old. YPP
2:00 pm An Extraordinary Ordinary Moth- Meet Kristen in the Activity Shelter behind the Nature Center to hear a storybook story about a moth. Then color a picture of a moth any color you want. A great activity for kids or adults who love moths. YPP
4:00 pm Go Batty for Bats- Cute or creepy, bats are an important part of our environment. Join Kristen at the Activity Shelter behind the Nature Center to learn about some of WV’s native bat species and ways that they support our ecosystem. YPP
WEDNESDAY, July 19, 2023
10:00 am Deer Talk Time- Join Kristen at the activities shelter behind the nature center to learn about deer. We will talk about the different signs and behaviors of adult white-tailed deer and give participants a chance to touch a deer pelt. Additionally, Kristen will discuss what to do if you come across a fawn. YPP
3:00 pm Plaster Tracks- Meet Kristen in the Activity Shelter behind the Nature Center to make a plaster track to take home. Drying times may vary due to weather conditions, but please allow for a minimum of 30 minutes. YPP
5:00 pm Wildlife of North America Game- Meet Julie at the Nature Center for a quiz game about North American wildlife. YPP

2:00 pm Hummingbirds: Magic in the Air- Meet Kristen at the Activity Shelter behind the Nature Center to learn some interesting facts about our favorite little feathered friendsYPP
4:00 pm Amphibians of West Virginia Craft- Meet Kristen at the Activity Shelter behind the Nature Center to learn about our state’s amphibians while we create frog craft.YPP
4:30 pm Pond Walk- Join Bryce at the Activity Shelter behind the Nature Center following the Amphibians of West Virginia Craft on a pond walk located below the Nature Center to see what amphibians and other critters call the pond home. YPP
Young People for Parks
YPP is an environmental education program for youth ages 6-16. Participants attend three specified activities during their stay. For more information inquire at the Nature Center.
