August Activities: Holly River

Naturalist Jane Birdsong invites one and all to activities at Holly River State Park planned for August 11-13, 2022. Attendance is free. Participation is fun. Because, by golly, it’s Holly!

THURSDAY. August 11, 2022
2 PM
VERY FISHY
Learn the parts of a fish, fold an origami fish, then feed baby trout in our trout rearing pond. Meet the naturalist in the Old Pavilion. The origami is pure art and you learn about fish. (YPP)

4 PM
ARCHERY
Learn to hold a bow, load arrows, target shoot and long shots. Look for the naturalist at the archery range in the game field across from the office.

FRIDAY, August 12, 2022
10 AM
BADMINTON & FRISBEE
For fun and exercise, meet Naturalist Jane at the badminton net near the pool. Pool opens at 11 so we can jump in and cool off, and catch frisbees as you jump off the diving board if you want a challenge.

DRAGONFLIES
Meet the fighter jets of the insect world – learn about their amazing abilities and make a beautiful one to take home. (YPP) Meet the naturalist in Windy Gap Schoolyard / Balli Shelter if it’s rainy.

4 PM
ARCHERY
Learn to hold a bow, load arrows, target shoot and long shots. Look for the naturalist at the archery range in the game field across from the office. This activity is designed for individuals that have never or for a long time used a recurve bow. Its a great low key introduction to archery. Join us.

SATURDAY, August 13, 2022
9 AM
HIKE entire REVERIE TRAIL
Hike the Reverie Trail to Tecumseh Falls and beyond to the primitive camp. Bring water & lunch snacks, wear sturdy shoes. Hiking stick and trek poles are helpful. Meet naturalist Jane on the office porch no later than 9 AM. (YPP)

BUTTERFLIES & MOTHS
Learn the subtle differences between these 2 flying insects; color one to take home. (YPP) Windy Gap Schoolyard / Balli shelter if rainy

4 PM
ARCHERY
Learn to hold a bow, load arrows, target shoot & long shots. Look for the naturalist at the archery range in the game field across from the office.

All Naturalist Programs are FREE to everyone! YPP (Young People for Parks) encourages youth of ages 6 – 16 to go outdoors and explore nature in our state parks. Completion of 3 naturalist programs in one week will earn a certificate; completion of 5 YPP programs will earn a patch.

If you are interested in the WV Master Naturalist Program, Naturalist Jane is involved and an active member. She can answer your questions.
