A 4th of July Weekend: Cacapon

Celebrate the July 4th weekend taking advantage of planned activities at Cacapon Resort State Park, July 1 – 4, 2023. Activities are conducted or begin at the nature center unless noted.
SATURDAY, July 1, 2023
9:30AM WV Morning Melodies
Discover Cacapon’s common song birds and learn to identify them by sight and sound. Binoculars provided. YPP
1:00PM Magnificent Monarchs
Learn all about the monarch life cycle & look for monarch eggs. YPP
2:30PM Red, White, & Blue Cacapon Tie-Dye
Join us at the Nature Center for a fun afternoon of tie-dying! Make this a State Park tradition & take home your own park tie-dye T-shirt! ***State Park T-shirts sold at Nature Center $10.00 will cover T-shirt & dye OR tie-dye a bandana for your pet!
3:30PM Water Balloon Challenge
Fun for the whole family!
7:00PM-8:00PM West Virginia Owls
Learn all about owl’s superpowers! Enjoy a power point on owls, followed by dissecting an owl pellet. YPP
8:30PM-10:00PM Moth Madness & LED Night Games
Meet at the tennis court parking area to join in the night games. Identify moths on a black light back drop and play LED volleyball, corn hole, & badminton. Glow sticks for everyone too! YPP

10:00AM Black Bear Game
Learn some black bear facts & play a self-guided game. YPP
1:00PM Racoon Fun Learn some fun facts about racoons and touch racoon pelt! YPP
2:00PM Wildlife Pelts & Molds
Learn about our wildlife through pelts, scat, & make your own wildlife track mold. YPP
3:00PM WV Snakes
Learn helpful ways to tell if a snake is venomous or non-venomous. Learn some fun facts about
common WV snakes. (No Live Snakes in program) YPP
7:00PM Evening History Walk
Meet park volunteer & Potomac Valley Master Naturalist at the front desk of the lodge to learn the park’s history.
Join us in the common area of the south lodge for a variety of BINGO games & prizes for the winners.
8:45PM-9:45PM – Full Moon Night Hike
Join park naturalists to enjoy the Full Buck Moon while hiking past the upper reservoir to the North Fork Cabin Area. Meet at the front desk of the lodge. YPP
MONDAY, July 3, 2023
9:00AM Ridge Trail Hike
Join park volunteer & Potomac Valley Master Naturalist to learn all about natural & cultural history along this 1.5 moderate trail. YPP
10:00AM Tai Chi
This class will help increase balance, flexibility, and focus on connection to mind, body, & spirit. Location lodge.
10:30AM Full Buck Moon
Craft Learn some fun facts about the while tail deer. YPP
1:30PM Stream Study
Discover what makes a stream healthy and what unlikely critters may be hiding in plain sight! You may want to bring shoes to get wet. YPP
3:00PM Amazing Amphibians
Learn common frogs and toads by sight & sound. YPP

10:00AM Tree Identification
Learn some common WV trees, followed by a fun craft. YPP
1:00PM The CCC Boys: A West Virginia Legacy
The CCC boys left a legacy that can still be enjoyed by all in our beautiful WV forests and parks. (30 min film) Followed by a 30 minute history walk. YPP
2:30PM Wildflower Garden Tour
Find out what plants are needed for a monarch Way Station. You can help monarch butterflies by planting milkweed. YPP
4:00PM Patriotic Music Celebration
Join Doug & Darinda on the outside North Lodge patio for music to commemorate our country’s birthday.
Come and visit the Tom Ambrose Nature Center! The nature center is a great stop for all ages, showcasing exhibits on the park history and the Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC) Camp Morgan 1934-41. Other West Virginia natural exhibits include an extensive taxidermy
collection of wildlife- fish, birds, fox, bobcat, mountain lion, deer, elk, and eastern grey wolf!
