October Outdoors: Blackwater Falls

Kick the weekend off on Friday, October 20, 2023 at Blackwater Falls State Park. Take advantage of the activities or take a hike or walk to the falls area, Gentle Trail or other pathways or enjoy a great meal at the Smokehouse Restaurant located in Blackwater Falls Lodge.
FRIDAY, October 20, 2023
Nature Center Open: 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.
11:00 p.m. Slime Time
Join the naturalist to discover how some animals use slime for survival. Create a baggie of slime to take home compliments of Blackwater Falls. About 45 minutes. YPP
2:00 p.m. Tree Scavenger Hunt & Cookie Craft
Join the seasonal naturalist to pick up a scavenger list and get creative on a tree cookie or create a unique tree cookie print using a torch (parent must be with child when using torch) outside on side porch. About 1 hour. YPP
5:00 p.m. Ramblin’ Ranger Creature Feature- Going Batty!
Find the seasonal park naturalist in Blackwater Falls Lodge Lobby for his display about bats of West Virginia and perhaps create your own flapper. Test your knowledge about bats, pick up a trail map, ask a question or simply stop to say hello. Naturalist display in lobby about 1.5. hours. YPP
7:30 p.m. Rock-tober- Dig It!
Join seasonal park naturalist and visiting geologist with the West Virginia Geologic and Economic Survey as he presents an evening presentation about “The Mountain State” in Blackwater Falls Lodge, Shay Room. The program includes examples of rocks and an introduction to what lies beneath the surface in an informal yet interesting presentation. Program is about an hour long, open to the public at no cost. YPP
SATURDAY, October 21, 2023
Nature Center Open: 10:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.
10:00 a.m. Rock-tober-Rockin’ It on the trail of Geology
Join the visiting geologist and park naturalist at Pendleton Point Overlook as we ramble deeper into the rocks, terrain and perhaps fossils that make Blackwater Falls State Park. Program begins at scenic view of Blackwater Canyon then optional ramble on a rock and root strewn path with a short but steep grade of less than ½ mile. About 90 minutes. Program is open to the public at no cost YPP
11:30 a.m. Spooky Spiders
Join the seasonal naturalist to find out more about the spiders of West Virginia. The spiders and webbing are a popular Halloween decoration but are they as fearsome as believed? About 30 minutes. YPP
2:00 p.m. Spooky Tales and Chili Campfire
Join the naturalists to hear some spooky tales while enjoying a cup of chili cooked over the coals. About 1 hour. YPP
