Join the nature team at Blackwater Falls for September activities September 2 – 5, 2022 that include Tie-dye, Bear Aware, and edible plant hikes. We welcome September at Blackwater Falls and the twinge of fall color arrival.

FRIDAY, September 2, 2022
Nature Center Open: 2:00 -5:00 p.m.
Visit the outdoor team at the nature center this afternoon. Get familiar with activities plann for Saturday, Sunday and Monday.

SATURDAY, September 3, 2022
Nature Center Open: 10:30 a.m. -5:00 p.m.

10:30 a.m. –12:00 p.m.
Twisted Tie–Dye
Join the staff to create your own Blackwater Falls Souvenir t-shirt (white, black or purple shirts).
Adult size shirts $10.00, Youth size shirts $8.00

11:30 a.m.
First Snow in the Woods & Finger-painting
Join the recreation staff for this kid friendly video about a worried scarecrow as he
watches animals prepare for winter. About 30 minutes. NR Includes a finger-painting craft for
free. YPP

2:00 p.m.
Butterflies & Craft Wings
Join the park naturalist to listen about our state butterfly . Afterwards, create a pair of child sized cardboard “stained glass” wings. The use of a utility knife requires an adult to assist their child.
About 1 hour. Craft fee: $3.00 YPP

4:00 p.m.
Black Bear Aware
Join the park naturalist to learn about our state mammal and how to keep the bear and you safe in bear habitat. About 1 hour. YPP

5:00 p.m.
Natural Cordage & Primitive FireSkills
Join the seasonal naturalist at the campfire ring beside Nature Center to learn some basics about creating cordage from plants , Also
try your hand at creating flame from flint and steel. Inclement weather moves program in-doors with cancellation of primitive fire. About 1.5 hours. YPP

8:30 p.m. Sundown Prowl
Enjoy an evening of fun as we watch the sun set at Pendleton Point and experience the dark as it approaches. .We’ll look up for constellations, look down and all around for nocturnal animals as we experience using our five senses. , About 3/4 mile.

Not recommended for very young children. Please, keep your flashlight in your pocket until the conclusion of the hike. YPP

Rain Alternative to Sundown Prowl is an indoor Movie– Enjoy this G rated movie about
puppies that travel across town to a spooky mansion. About 88 minutes.

Who was Porte Crayon?
Join the seasonal naturalist, Kenny, in the bus /Falls overflow graveled parking area near the park intersection to learn a little history of the area and hear about Porte Crayon adventures. About 1 hour. YPP

11:30 a.m.
The Bee Movie and Candle Making
Join the staff to create a candle then watch a movie while it solidifies. Craft fee: $4.00. About
1.5 hours. YPP

2:30 p.m.
Edible and Medicinal Plant Walk
Join the seasonal naturalist as he picks out a few plants along a short hike that has edible or medicinal qualities. About 1 hour. About 1/2 mile. YPP

3:00 p.m.
Backyard Bugs
Nature Film & Save the Bees Bracelet Craft with the staff. Craft fee: $2.00 YPP

MONDAY, September 5, 2022
Nature Center Open: 10:30 a.m. -4:30 p.m.

9:30 a.m.
Nature Stroll
Join park naturalist for a stroll along trails around the nature center. About 1.5 miles, 70 minutes. YPP

11:30 a.m.
West Virginia Snakes
Join the park naturalist, Paulita, to hear about snakes that call West Virginia home. A live snake will be presented during the program. About 1 hour. YPP

1:00 p.m.
I Spy Way up High
Join the staff to create a weather window, and learn about weather by watching a film. About one hour, a little walking. YPP

2:30 p.m. Vultures-Nature’s Cleanup Crew
Join the naturalist to learn the different type of vultures found in the area and their role in the ecosystem. Afterwards create your own baggie of vulture vomit (slime) to take home. How cool is that? About 30 minutes. YPP
