Great Weekend Activities: Cacapon

July 29, 2022 - July 31, 2022

Weekend activities at Cacapon Resort State Park include tye-die, moths, a night hike, and campfire fun. A special presentation, Snakes of WV with a guest biologist, is featured on Saturday. Join Naturalist Valerie Chaney and summer team, Garrett, Allen and Mary and park volunteers at the nature center (unless another location is indicated), July 29-31, 2022.

Meet the Park Naturalist at the lodge to answer any general park questions you may have or find out what amazing recreation and nature activities Cacapon has to offer. Welcome to Cacapon Resort State Park!

SNAKES ALIVE!
Join WVDNR Biologist to learn all about non-venomous and venomous snakes. Get a close look at a variety of snakes at the park gazebo, near nature center.

8:30-10PM
BLACK LIGHT MOTH STUDY
This is national moth week! Learn and discover a variety of moths outside the nature center this evening. Bring your camera or smartphone and snap a image. We’ll identify as many as we can and if we’re stumped having a photo can help us research the answer.

CACAPON CAMPFIRE
Join us for a morning of learning how to start a primitive campfire by using flint and steel. Campfire pancakes cooked on a cast iron griddle can be sampled (one per person/first come first served)

MILKWEED MANIA
Did you know that milkweed is the only plant monarchs will lay their eggs on? Find out more and receive a free milkweed plant. Supplies limited, first come first served.

Make your own Cacapon Resort State Park tie dye T-shirt! $10

FLYING SQUIRRELS
Join Dr. Peggy Shaw-McBee for a power point presentation at Cacapon Lodge (not the nature center).. She is an Ohio certified volunteer naturalist and a certified wildlife biologist holding positions with the Wildlife Society, Nature Conservancy, US Fish & Wildlife Service, and is happy to share her knowledge of flying squirrels.

DISCOVERY NIGHT HIKE
Meet park naturalists at the lodge to gather for the night hike. Discover evening and night sights and sounds near the upper lake and night skies. Bring a flashlight.

Berkeley Springs State Park Orientation & History
Meet summer naturalists at the warm springs near George Washington’s Bathtub. Drop in
anytime from 10-11:30am to see historic photos of the park through the years.

Learn about the park’s many invasive plants and help us battle them. Loppers provided.

Visit the Tom Ambrose Nature Center! at Cacapon State Park. The nature center is a great stop for all ages, showcasing exhibits on the park’s history and the Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC) Camp Morgan 1934-41.

Other West Virginia natural exhibits include an extensive taxidermy collection of wildlife- fish, birds, fox, bobcat, mountain lion, deer, elk, and eastern grey wolf! Also, hands-on sand displays for wildlife tracks and a new geology interactive map to design your own mountains, rivers and lakes. Take a park naturalist guided hike or join the daily activities! The Nature Center is open daily from 9AM-5PM.
