Enjoy springtime at Blackwater Falls State Park and enjoy these nature-based activities when visiting April 22 – 24, 2022. Find this fun at the Nature Center unless indicated at another location. Exhibits and displays welcome all ages. There is ample parking and the nature center is accessible.

Amazing Amphibians Walk
Join the park naturalist to learn more about the amphibious species that call Blackwater Falls home! Meet at Sled Run fire circle (not at the nature center) to enter the woods
and actively search for amphibians (perhaps a reptile!). Paulita the Naturalist will assist in identifying the local herps, along with proper handling techniques for this sensitive group. About 1 hour. 1/2 mile or less. YPP

Litter Scavenger Hunt:
Pick up a copy of our litter scavenger hunt at the nature center and learn about some common litter items found around the park. Winner
receives a free boat ride at Pendleton lake. 1 hour. YPP
2:00 p.m.
Woodland Box Turtle
Join the naturalist, to learn about the only land turtle in West Virginia followed with a fun and interactive game for the entire family. Very little walking involved. About 1 hour YPP

Learn about herbs while planting a small herb garden for your kitchen at home. Craft fee: $2.00 YPP

Weather Video and Craft
Join the staff for this whirlwind tour of Earth’s turbulent atmosphere that reveals the forces that make the day fair or foul. Also, create a rain gauge craft.

Disappearing Stars
Join the park naturalist to discover why the stars are disappearing from our view and can it be stopped? 45 minutes. YPP
7:00 p.m.
Sundown Hike
This evening hike begins from the graveled Blackwater Falls Overflow/Bus parking area near the main park intersection. The hike will be on River Road Trail that meanders along the Blackwater River on an old railroad grade to the town of Davis. This is an out and back hike of about 3 miles with limited stops for interpretation. Sturdy shoes or hiking boots are necessary. Packing a flashlight, water bottle and a snack is recommended. Approximately 2 hours. YPP
