Wilderness Skills

Cacapon Resort State Park Nature Center is hosting hands-on wilderness skills programs for youths and adults offered in cooperation with Mountaineer Wilderness, LLC. Mark Chapin, military veteran, brings years of outdoor education experience to each hands-on learning programs in the skills and methods essential for every back packer, day hiker, and hunter.

The outdoor training season kicks off on April 13 with three awesome programs. First Nature Center for a 2-hr Edible Plants Hike open to youths and adults. Come join us as we explore the Park’s trails, fields, and woods searching out and identifying dozens of plants and trees on this popular 2-hr Edible Plants Hike. If you’ve ever wanted to take up foraging, or to prepare yourself for survival, this is a great hike.

At 1:00 p.m., a 3-hr Course on Backpacking and Wilderness Survival Skills for youths and adults is for folks starting to backpack or those experienced in the outdoors who want to refresh their skills before that next wilderness adventure. If you’ve never had training in wilderness survival, this is where you start.

A Cacapon Overnight Survival Trek begins at 6:00 p.m. for the more adventurous. This trek for adults provides expert one-on-one instruction, building confidence as you practice your skills in the field before they are needed in an emergency. You’ll learn everything from primitive fire making and foraging, to making effective sheltering and advanced navigation methods. The 3-hr Backpacking and Wilderness Survival Skills Course is a prerequisite for the overnight trek and you can register for both online at www.mountaineerwilderness.com or email [email protected] Courses are fee based, and advanced registration is required.
