About Red Skelton the comedian: Red Skelton was the son of a former circus clown turned grocer and a cleaning woman. He was introduced to show business at the age of seven at a vaudeville show. At age 10, he left home to travel with a medicine show through the Midwest, and joined the vaudeville circuit at age 15. He debuted on Broadway and radio in 1937 and on film in 1938. The Red Skelton Hour premiered on NBC in 1951. For two decades, he kept audiences and television viewers laughing with his characters or Clem Kaddiddlehopper, George Appleby, and the seagulls Gertrude and Heathcliffe. Red Skelton died in 1997; however, his comedy lives on with performances by folks like Jennings Barnett.
