Since 1987, the dark skies at Blackwater Falls State Park has welcomed the Kanawha Valley Astronomical Society to take advantage of dark skies that occur shortly after a new moon. Dark skies at Blackwater Falls State Park are a treasured resource! Visitors are astounded by the darkness! Often, the Milky Way stretches from horizon to horizon!
This group hosts an amazing astronomy weekend that is open to the public. Activities and programs offered during Astronomy Weekend appeal to the novice as well as the advanced amateur astronomer. Included are daytime astronomy presentations, nighttime star parties, door prize drawings, keynote speakers, and a chance to tour the largest fully steerable radio telescope in the world at Green Bank, WV on your own.
Astronomers, astrophotographers, and individuals fascinated with constellations are welcomed. Bring the family or come alone to enjoy a treasured resource—dark skies! The weekend activities include: Friday afternoon reception, Presentations: Requirements for Detectable Life in Space (Bob Frostick), Very Long exposure Deep Sky Imagine (Brent Maynard), Astrophotography Open Discussion (KVAS staff), Star Party at the Nature Center (weather permitting).
