Valley Falls State Park Trails

The Valley Falls State Park trail system is a natural vision of scenery and tranquility. Visitors can choose from any of the eight hiking trails for 18 miles of ravine, downhill paths, overlooks and more. Hikers and bikers also have the option to follow a path that connects all of the trails for a 10-mile continuous loop for the ultimate outdoor experience. Whether you’re a beginner or a veteran explorer, the trails boast the ideal adventure for everyone to relish.

Easy

Red Cardinal Trail – 1 Mile

The Red Cardinal Trail can be picked up from the Dogwood Trail, Wild Turkey Trail or Deer Trail.  It follows downhill back to the park entrance. 

Moderate

Deer Trail – 2.1 Miles

This trail is the perfect beginner as you follow the Tygart River upstream. It is moderately level with a modest uphill grade. All visitors are encouraged to take the necessary precautions. 

Rhododendron Trail – 1.9 Miles

The Rhododendron Trail passes by the gorgeous waterfalls before coming to a climb at the northern portion of the park. It is relatively steep near the end, but otherwise relatively easy. 

Tygart Valley (River) Trail – 0.2 Miles

Catch a close glimpse of the waterfalls by hiking this trail. This trail is relatively level with one steep incline and easy to access from the parking lot.

Difficult

Dogwood Trail – 0.8 miles

This trail starts with a steep incline from the Rhododendron Trail along the northernmost ridge of Valley Falls. The leveled payoff is well worth the journey as you pass by jaw-dropping scenery with some easy access to nearby trails in the park.

Red Fox Trail – 0.35 Miles

The Red Fox Trail acts as a connector between the Dogwood Trail and the Deer Trail. It intersects with the main road before heading down the hillside with a steep grade. Please watch your step. 

Rocky Trail – 1.8 Miles

This trail takes a majestic detour through the forest, connecting two sections of the Rhododendron trail. It is steep at both ends, with a short level area atop the ridge.

Wild Turkey Trail – 1.8 miles

The upper ridge of the Wild Turkey Trail leads up to the peak of Valley Falls State Park, but is steep on both ends in between. Though it is a physically demanding path, the views are well worth the journey.
