With a reputation as the longest and fastest sled run in the east, it’s no wonder the sled run at Blackwater Falls State Park is a hot spot, often selling out quickly. Don’t miss out on all the fun—order your sled run tickets in advance!
The sled run is one of the most popular winter attractions at West Virginia state parks. Riders zip down a quarter mile of freshly groomed snow, surrounded by snow-capped evergreens that transform the area into a winter wonderland.
The sled run is equipped with lights for nighttime sledding and has a conveyor belt that tows riders and their sleds back to the top of the hill. When sledders need a break from the cold, they can warm up by an outdoor fire or head inside the warming hut for hot chocolate and snacks.
‘Highlight of our trip’
“It was a total winter wonderland … the pictures do not do it justice! We just marveled at the beauty of mother nature. There is a visitor’s center where you can grab a map of the park within the gift shop. Expect steps of various heights and be sure to bring your camera for the falls! We could not believe there was no fee to enjoy this beautiful park. You can also drive to a nature center and the sled park. (It was packed!)”—Melaney68, TripAdvisor reviewer from Chesapeake Beach, Md.
Blackwater Falls is a four-seasons destination. The park’s namesake waterfall is stunning in winter when it’s draped in curtains of ice and set against a snowy forest background. The park offers 20 miles of hiking trails, many of which are suitable for snowshoeing and cross-country skiing. Rentals are available at the sled run.
Winter accommodations include a full-service lodge and guest cabins—some of which are pet friendly, so you can bring your furry buddy to play in the snow, too.
