Moth Night: Blackwater Falls

July 29, 2022 @ 8:30 pm - 10:00 pm

The Friends of Blackwater and Blackwater Falls State Park invite you to attend Moth Night. It’s a great evening program.

Blackwater Falls State Park celebrates moths on Friday evening, July 29, 2022 in conjunction with National Moth Week,
Meet at Blackwater Falls Nature Center at 8:30 p.m. Moth Night will be set up from 8:30 until 10:00 p.m.

Some basic differences between moths and butterflies to get you started:

Moth: Thick, furry body, thread-like or frond like antennae and when resting, wings fold down over their body so the wing tops are visible

Butterfly: Thin, smooth bodies, smooth antennae ending in a bulb or “club”, and when resting, wings fold over the body so under-sides are visible

Bring the whole family to watch for many different moths that may visit several special lighting and backdrop stations staged to attract them. Taking photos of moths helps to identify them using apps and printed book resources. Consider bringing your smart phones or cameras. We’ll keep a list of moths observed.

Interpretative leaders are Aaron Graham with Friends of Blackwater and Naturalist Paulita Cousin of Blackwater Falls State Park.
