Holly River State Park is packed with summer fun. Visitors are encouraged to take advantage of these programs, particularly Fireflies, Butterflies and Archery. Your nature host is Jane Birdsong, Summer/Master Naturalist on July 13 – 15, 2023.
THURSDAY, July 13, 2023
2 PM – INTREPID CLIMBERS ONLY
If you’ve always wanted to climb to the Top of Potato Knob, join a small group of intrepid climbers on July 13. Sturdy shoes and Trek poles or hiking sticks are necessary. Pack a small backpack w/ water and wading shoes for a trip to Lower Falls after. Meet @ Holly River State Park office by 1:45 PM to sign up.

10 AM – FIREFLIES – WHAT MAKES THEM GLOW?
Learn about their evolutionary history and how to take part in a firefly survey the Division of Natural Resources is asking folks to help accomplish! Windy Gap Schoolyard – YPP
2 PM – INCREDIBLE JOURNEY
Become a water droplet as you move through all the places Water can be on planet EARTH – a very active game. Learn while having fun in Windy Gap Schoolyard/ Old Pavilion if rainy YPP
4 pm – ARCHERY
Learn to hold a bow, load arrows, target shoot & long shots. Look for naturalist Jane at the archery range in the game field across from the Holly River State Park office. YPP
SATURDAY, July 15, 2023
10 AM – NATURE CRAFT: PINECONE BIRD FEEDERS
Feed your feathered Friends. Meet naturalist Jane in Windy Gap Schoolyard (Balli Shelter if rainy). The naturalists will bring all supplies & bags to carry them home. All ages welcome. Its a great time to craft and learn about birds.
2 PM – BUTTERFLIES & MOTHS
Learn the subtle differences between these amazing flying insects, color one to take home. Windy Gap Schoolyard/ Balli shelter if rainy. YPP
4 pm – ARCHERY
Learn to hold a bow, load arrows, target shoot & long shots. Look for the naturalist at the archery range in the game field across from the office. YPP
YPP – Young People for Parks centers on environmental activities that encourage youth of ages 6 – 16 to get outdoors and explore nature. Participants who attend at least 3 activities with the park naturalist and can recall in writing what they learned, are awarded a certificate or other token.
