Winter is the best time to enjoy a lodge stay at West Virginia State Parks

Snow sports, spas and holiday celebrations rank among favorite activities

It’s that time of the year when many people start dreaming about summer vacation. But you don’t have to wait for warm weather to enjoy an Almost Heaven stay at a West Virginia state park lodge. They have all the amenities you need, including full-service restaurants, banquet facilities and free WiFi. Some even have indoor swimming pools and spas, and of course the parks system has hundreds of miles of hiking trails, open year-round.

Fun in the snow

If your idea of a great time is zipping down a snow-covered hillside, the Allegheny Mountains are the place to be. Winter activities at Canaan Valley Resort include skiing, snowboarding and tubing, and ice-skating at an outdoor rink.

Just a short drive away, Blackwater Falls is home of the longest sled run on the East Coast and is laced with scenic trails suitable for snowshoeing and cross-country skiing.

Holiday celebrations

Feeling moved by the Christmas spirit? Have a hankering to ring in the New Year in style? Many of our lodge parks are hosting Santa visits and New Year’s Eve dances, so make your getaway plans today!

There’s nothing like twinkling holiday lights, and Chief Logan is known for its annual Christmas in the Park drive-thru exhibit that features thousands of lights. Santa is even expected to put in several appearances at the park, so make sure the kids have their lists ready!

Santa also is expected to pay visits to Twin Falls Resort, Tygart Lake and North Bend for breakfast or cocoa and cookies.

If you’re staying at Hawks Nest lodge, stop at the New River Gorge Overlook just down the road to browse the Christmas Shoppe, stocked with holiday ornaments and West Virginia made products.

Snag a great overnight package rate on dinner-dances at Cacapon Resort, Pipestem Resort, Chief Logan, North Bend or Twin Falls Resort. You’re guaranteed to have an unforgettable New Year’s Eve.

First Day Hikes

If you’re one of the many people who made a New Year’s Resolution to become more physically active in 2020, why not join one of the First Day Hikes taking place at North Bend, Chief Logan, Blackwater Falls, Tygart Lake, Cacapon Resort or Twin Falls Resort? These guided hikes are fun for the whole family and feature park scenery and perhaps even some winter wildlife.

The holiday rush often leaves us longing for a little rest and relaxation. You’ll find that—and more—at Stonewall Resort and Canaan Resort. Both lodges have full-service spas with services ranging from Swedish massages to facial treatments.

Or, stay at Cacapon Resort and take advantage of the Roman baths and additional spa services available at nearby Berkeley Springs State Park.  (The spa at this day-use park is open year-round.)
