Celebrate spring’s arrival with a camping getaway at West Virginia’s northernmost park. Tucked among the hills of the Northern Panhandle alongside a rippling stream that lends the park its name, Tomlinson Run State Park offers a wilderness escape where you forget your cares and bask in the beauty of Almost Heaven.
Stay overnight
The smell of roasting marshmallows is calling! Pack your tent or RV and get ready to make some great memories under the stars. Book your stay online before you leave, and your spot will be waiting for you. The park’s campground has all the conveniences of home, including bathhouses, laundry facilities and a camp store. If you don’t want the hassle of setting up a tent, camper cabins are already furnished and awaiting your arrival.
Play outside
Tomlinson Run offers plenty of options for outdoor play in the spring. Hike or bike several miles of trails that wind through heavily forested hills and past rocky overhangs. Look for spring wildflowers that pepper the woods and fields with their cheerful colors. Track the calls of returning migratory birds or see if you can spot tadpoles in the spring-fed streams and puddles.
Anglers will have the opportunity to reel in trout, bass, catfish and bluegill at Tomlinson Run Lake. Time your visit with the return of the West Virginia Gold Rush April 1-13, 2024. Catch a tagged golden rainbow trout and you might win a big prize! (Don’t forget your West Virginia fishing license and trout stamp.)
Spring campers also have use of basketball and volleyball courts, playground equipment and an 18-hole disc golf course.
Explore the area
While you’re camping at Tomlinson Run, you might enjoy exploring this charming and quirky region at the Top of West Virginia. Pop into Weirton for some local eats or a cup of coffee.
Head to Chester and snap a selfie at the World’s Largest Teapot. Once a root beer barrel-shaped concession stand, it was converted into a giant teapot as a tribute to the area’s flourishing pottery industry.
Take a drive down to Oglebay Resort in Wheeling, where you can stroll beautiful gardens, take a horseback ride (weather permitting) or visit with the animals at The Good Zoo.
