Panther State Forest Trails
Panther State Forest provides access to miles of connecting trails and unimproved roadways for pure and rustic bliss, suitable to every hiking desire. All gated roads are open to foot traffic, allowing visitors to explore some of West Virginia’s most remote areas. Be sure to pick up a trail guide before venturing out.
Moderate
Twin Rocks Trail – 0.75 Miles
The most trouble-free trail in the forest, Twin Rocks begins on the Drift Branch Trail behind the Group Camp. (If the Group Camp is in use, the trail is accessible from the footbridge downstream.) Veering right where Drift Branch leads around a contour, the trail crosses a power line right of way and leads down an old tram road and back onto the main road.
Difficult
Loop Trail – 2 Miles
Underutilized and difficult to follow in several sections, the Loop trail is recommended for experienced hikers only.
Overlook Trail – 0.75 Miles
This trail is accessible either from the campground or Georges Fork. Though the overlook structure has been removed, hikers can still find scenic views of the rugged geology of the Cumberland Mountains and sandstone rock outcrop.
Drift Branch Trail – 1.7 Miles
This trail starts behind the Group Camp. (If the Group Camp is occupied, the trail can be accessed from the footbridge downstream.) The first section is steep and follows a contour until the trail reaches a drain, then follows the drain. The trail crosses two roads and a powerline right of way. At the top of the hill, the trail ends at the fire tower.
