North Bend Rail Trail Activities

Stretching 72 miles across north-central and western West Virginia, the North Bend Rail Trail takes travelers across 36 bridges and through 10 tunnels. The trail is part of the 5,500-mile American Discovery Trail, which spans the length of the United States. It has become one of the most renowned recreational trails through the Appalachian Mountains and is known for its scenery and varied views of shaded tree canopies, rock cuts and farmland.

    Camping

    North Bend Rail Trail allows cold camping along the trail for free with fires in fireplaces only. Pack your sleeping bag and head to the neighboring North Bend State Park for the ultimate overnight adventure. Their campground is open spring through fall, weather permitting.

    Biking

    A tour through gorgeous mountain scenery is just one two-wheeler away. Your next fast-paced escapade awaits along the North Bend Rail Trail, where hiking trails also double as biking trails. Bike rentals are available in the sister North Bend State Park and Cairo areas. A flat tire is no problem with four bike fix-it stations in Happy Valley, Smithburg, Petroleum and Salem. Wider track tires (above 1.5″) are recommended. Great fun begins with safety, so please be aware of all surroundings, including horses and fellow hikers who share the trails.

    ATV

    Double the wheels means double the thrill. Gear up to explore numerous ATV trails just minutes from the North Bend Rail Trail. Mountwood ATV Park offers 20 miles of trail grades ranging from easy and moderate to difficult. The spectacular views are just the icing on the cake, including a large overlook and rest area atop one of the highest ridges.

    Fishing

    There are many fishing opportunities with the nbrt crossing and paralleling many rivers and creeks. The trail bisects Walker Creek WMA with fishing there and centers around many different reservoirs for ideal fishing, including the renowned 305-acre recreational lake adjoined to North Bend State Park. Whether it’s a serene excursion or plentiful bass fishing, North Bend suits all your hook-baited desires. Be sure to purchase your fishing license online prior to venturing out.

    Geocaching

    There is treasure-hunting fun for everyone across the North Bend Rail Trail. Embark on this high-tech scavenge for riches hidden away in 5 different cache sites. All you need is a great team and a smartphone with a GPS. Don’t forget to bring rewards that will replace the ones you find so the chance for discovery may continue.

    Hiking

    The ever-popular North Bend Rail Trail runs from Parkersburg at its western point to Clarksburg at its eastern end. Hikers utilize the trail to witness some of the best scenic wildlife of West Virginia. The trail runs parallel to U.S. Route 50, offering many opportunities to stop in small mountain communities like Harrison, Doddridge, Ritchie, and Wood counties. Bikers and hikers must yield to equine.

    Horseback Riding

    Horseback riding on the North Bend Rail Trail is a great way to get closer to nature in a tranquil setting. Striking views peer around every corner as you tread with your trusty steed. A carriage fee is applied when pulling a wagon. Parking for horses is available at Happy Valley, Cairo, North Bend State Park, Ellenborro, West Union and Wolf Summit.
