Moncove Lake State Park Activities
Moncove Lake State Park is a favorite setting for outdoor gatherings, camping and water recreation. The park has excellent fishing opportunities and offers seasonal rowboat, kayak and paddleboat rentals. Its proximity to Peter’s Mountain and the ridge-and-valley section of the Appalachian Mountains make Moncove Lake a birding hot spot — more than 160 species can be seen in the area.
Biking
Hiking trails do not double as biking trails in Moncove Lake State Park, but you’re never too far away to catch a two-wheeled thrill. Greenbrier State Forest features 19 picturesque miles for every mountain biking level. Catch some great views and make cherished memories as you explore the vast forestry that awaits.
Boating
One day on the lake could lead to lifelong memories. Rowboats, kayaks and paddle boats are available for rent, with personal flotation devices provided. Visitors may bring their boats if they meet all state regulations and use less than a 5 hp gasoline motor. A boat ramp is available, and guests may dry dock their boats near the boat launch.
Camping
Moncove Lake State Park’s campground includes 48 tent and trailer sites, 35 of which have electric hookups. There are picnic tables and fire rings with grill surfaces, drinking water, a dump station and a central bathhouse with showers. Firewood is available for purchase upon your arrival. Camping is available April 1st through end of October. Some camping is available in November by calling 304-722-3450 as a courtesy to hunters.
Fishing
An angler’s paradise! Moncove Lake is 144 acres with excellent fishing opportunities for largemouth bass, bluegill, trout, catfish, walleye and yellow perch. A West Virginia fishing license is required, which you can purchase online.
Hiking
There are five hiking trails in the park for you to enjoy, most of which are relatively short, with the longest being around 2 miles. Hikers looking for a longer trek, check the nearby Allegheny Trail on Peter’s Mountain, which runs the length of the state, the southern terminus of which connects to the Appalachian Trail. While hiking in the area, look for the nearby wildlife – whitetail deer, turkey, fox, squirrels, chipmunks, beavers and more.
Hunting
The wildlife is abundant in and around the Moncove Lake area. Hunting opportunities are available on the Moncove Lake WMA, which comprises 500 acres of land adjacent to the park. Deer, turkey, squirrels, waterfowl and grouse are the most common game available. While in the state park, all guns, bows and broadheads must be in an approved case. Some camping is available in November by calling 304-722-3450 as a courtesy to hunters.
Licenses are available online.
