Hawks Nest State Park Activities
Visitors can take advantage of many outdoor activities during their visit to Hawks Nest State Park. From boating to fishing (for lodge guests only), hiking and scenic freshwater spots, there’s something for everyone. Also, with its close proximity to New River Gorge Bridge, you’ll have easy access to the region’s whitewater rapids, rock climbing and scenic hiking trails. Ride the river on a jet boat tour or explore your surroundings on a hike.
Boating
Enjoy a thrilling jet boat ride for the best views of the New River Gorge Bridge and Hawks Nest Lake Dam. You can also bring your motor boat, kayak or canoe to enjoy the water. One boat launch ramp is located at the marina near the lower section of the aerial tramway. A license is required before you hit the water.
Fishing
See what you can catch at Hawks Nest Lake with a day spent on the water. The lake is an impoundment of the New River, a premier small mouth bass fishery. The lake also harbors a healthy population of catfish, muskies and pan fish. Additionally, Mill Creek located along the south-eastern border of the park is stocked with trout in both the spring and fall. Proper license and stamps are required. Swimming is not permitted in the lake.
Golf
The New River Gorge region has plenty of golf courses. Stay on your game even while you’re on your getaway.
Hiking
Get a closer look at the beauty of the surrounding mountains by becoming your own pioneer at Hawks Nest State Park. You will enjoy beautiful hikes through eight miles of trails, which all add up to stunning West Virginia scenery. Each trail varies in difficulty, so stop by the park office beforehand to pick up a map for details.
Museums and Historical Sites
Hawks Nest is located on the Midland Trail National Scenic Byway, and the area has many stories to tell. The trail is the road of choice for those looking to leave the interstate behind and see the best of West Virginia, as Route 60 winds across West Virginia and is filled with scenic vistas, world-class rafting, artisan treasures and pioneer history.
Additionally, Hawks Nest State Park has a direct tie to the Civilian Conservation Corps. The hand-carved stone and log structures at the lower park were crafted by the members of the CCC and continue to offer coveted charm to many guests.
Outdoor Adventures
Whether you’re looking for water activities or adventures in the woods, Hawks Nest has you covered. Ride a Jet Boat to see the famous New River Gorge Bridge from the river below and the Hawks Nest dam. Guided bridge walks, airplane rides, rock climbing, horseback riding and bicycle rentals are available nearby.
Rafting
Hawks Nest State Park is in the heart of West Virginia’s whitewater rafting country, making it the perfect time to try something new and thrilling. Rafting on the New River is one of the most popular activities in Hawks Nest, with several whitewater rafting companies located within 10 minutes of the lodge. Enjoy the New River, or for the more adventurous, the wild waves of the Gauley!
Swimming
Get your feet wet at Hawks Nest pool and splash pad! Seasonal swimming, Memorial Day through Labor Day, is an amenity at Hawks Nest Lodge for overnight guests. Pool access is via a keyed entry system.
