Chief Logan State Park Activities

Chief Logan is a 4,000-acre haven where you can comfortably kick back and relax after a rousing day of hiking on the park’s open trails, fishing for trout and catfish at Chief Logan Lake and off-roading on the nearby Hatfield-McCoy Trails. Add in beautiful spring wildflowers, seasonal theatre performances and an annual holiday light display, and there’s no wonder why it is one of West Virginia’s most visited parks.

    Offroading, ATV & UTV Riding

    Ever tried world-class ATV riding? Look no further than the Hatfield-McCoy Trails System. More than 600 miles of territory are yours to explore, with convenient lodging and historic communities along the way. While ATV use is not permitted in the park, Chief Logan Lodge, which is located near the Bearwallow Trailhead, is the perfect place to unwind after an exciting day on the trails!

    Biking

    This is your opportunity to enjoy a day out in nature than taking to the 18 miles of open trails at Chief Logan by bike. Trails vary in degree and difficulty for bikers of all skill levels.

    Camping

    Chief Logan State Park’s campground, located at the state park area, is open March through November, with 26 units, 14 of which have full water, sewage and electric hookups. Twelve sites have electric and water only. Hot showers are available at a centrally located bathhouse.

    Fishing

    During your stay at the Chief Logan Lodge, head on over to the park and cast a line at Chief Logan Lake, regularly stocked with trout and catfish. But before you head out, make sure you purchase a current West Virginia fishing license.

    Geocaching

    If you like adventures through nature and searching for hidden treasure, then grab the whole family and hunt for the single hidden cache site at Chief Logan State Park. All you need is an enthusiastic team and a smartphone with GPS.

    Hiking

    Stretch your legs with a beautiful hike through Chief Logan State Park on 18 miles of open trails that vary in difficulty. With so much to explore, you’ll enjoy hiking at this hidden West Virginia gem!

    Horseback Riding

    Chief Logan State Park has 18 miles of trails perfect for horseback riding.

    Hunting

    The Earl Ray Tomblin WMA provides habitats for game such as deer, grouse, turkeys and waterfowl. Licenses are available online, and the Chief Logan WMA has ranges for shooting and archery.

    Museums and Historical Sites

    Want to learn more about the history of Chief Logan? A regional interest and area history museum is located at Chief Logan State Park. Come explore the past and gain a greater sense of appreciation for our gorgeous state park. Bring some history home with you from one of the park’s gift shops located in the museum.

    Outdoor Adventures

    For an activity that’s perfect for the whole family, come to Chief Logan State Park’s and try a hand at many of its options. Mini golf is open daily from Memorial Day to Labor Day from 12 p.m. to 8 p.m. Game courts and equipment for tennis, basketball and bocce ball are also available for a nominal fee.     Swimming

    Take a dip in the pool for some rest and relaxation! Chief Logan Lodge has an indoor guest pool. The state park also has an outdoor pool with a waterslide. The outdoor pool is located near the campground and is open daily from Memorial Day to Labor Day, 11 a.m. to 6 p.m.

    Elk Management Tours

    Elk tours are the best way to explore wildlife and learn about the history of elk management in West Virginia. Gain insight into what the West Virginia Division of Natural Resources is doing to make sure the growing elk herds thrive. Tours are offered in the fall and start at Chief Logan Lodge. Spots book up fast, so you’ll want to make a reservation as soon as possible. While there is no guarantee you will see or hear elk, state park naturalist and tour leader Lauren Cole has made these tours a fun and a learning experience you don’t want to miss!
