Carnifex Ferry Battlefield State Park Activities

In addition to taking in the history and the beautiful views of Carnifex Ferry Battlefield State Park, hike scenic park trails or drive to nearby Boley Lake in Babcock State Park. It is a popular fishing spot for largemouth bass, bluegill and channel catfish.

    Fishing

    For fishing opportunities, drive to nearby Boley Lake in Babcock State Park. It is a popular fishing spot for largemouth bass, bluegill and channel catfish. You may also fish from nearby streams. Don’t forget your fishing license. Purchase it online at wvdnr.gov.

    Geocaching

    Carnifex Ferry contains three cache sites for geocaching enthusiasts. Try to hunt the treasure before someone else beats you to it! Be sure to bring some small treasures of your own to share with the next explorer.

    Museums and Historical Sites

    Visitors may tour the restored Patterson house and interpretive museum, open seasonally Saturday, Sunday and holidays from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.

     

    On odd-numbered years, the Battle of Carnifex Ferry is re-enacted. The event, organized by volunteer organizations, includes living history demonstrations such as camp life, military drills and a re-enactment of the battle.

     

    Note: The Museum and Gift Shop at Carnifex Ferry Battlefield State Park closes for the season on Labor Day and reopens Memorial Day Weekend or earlier.

    Outdoor Adventures

    There are plenty of outdoor activities available at Carnifex horseshoe pits, game courts (volleyball and softball) and playground equipment.

    Picnicking

    Time for a picnic! Park amenities include picnic facilities with tables and grills, five reservable group shelters, restrooms, playground equipment, softball and volleyball areas and horseshoe pits. Note: Picnic area restrooms are winterized and closed for the season on October 31 and reopen by first weekend in April or earlier.

    Rafting

    When it comes to whitewater rafting, the Gauley River is one of the world’s best. Crave adventure? Enormous waves and tricky currents create Class V rapids all year. The Gauley gets even more tempestuous during fall,  hanks to timed dam releases. Contact local outfitters for a thrilling trip you’ll never forget!
