Enjoy outdoor adventures and cozy mountain cabins with your family.

There’s just something magical about Cacapon Resort State Park and West Virginia’s eastern panhandle that makes you want to take a summer trip or escape to the mountains for a relaxing getaway. This area is known for its beautiful scenery, relaxed atmosphere full of history and small-town charm and its famous “medicine waters” — a reference to mineral water with fabled healing powers that have attracted visitors throughout history.

Cacapon is the perfect home base for an eastern panhandle trip. If a week of outdoor adventures and family memories sounds like heaven to you, let the road lead you to Cacapon this summer!

Mountain views you’ll never forget

Wildflowers as far as the eye can see. Forest views that will make you feel like a kid again. And mountaintop vistas that will fill you with a sense of awe. Cacapon Resort has much to offer in the way of natural beauty.

One can’t-miss attraction at this park is the Cacapon Mountain Overlook. At 2,285 feet above sea level, hikers who make the trek to the overlook are rewarded with a sweeping view of West Virginia, Virginia, Maryland and Pennsylvania.

But that’s not the only hike at Cacapon worth checking out! The park has 23 miles of trails, many with scenic overlooks and opportunities for wildflower and wildlife viewing.

Outdoor adventures and small-town charm all within a short drive

A trip to Cacapon has everything you’d expect from a mountain resort town. From golfing to lake adventures, fishing, swimming, guided horseback rides and wobble clay shooting, there’s plenty of outdoor activities for you and your family to enjoy.

And a visit to Cacapon would not be complete without a stop at nearby Berkeley Springs State Park, home to a world-famous mineral spa that has been in use since Colonial times. Today, visitors can view a replica of a bathtub used by George Washington, our nation’s first president. At its Old Roman and Main bathhouses, the park offers a variety of spa services, including massages, saunas, Roman baths and showers. An outdoor swimming pool filled with natural spring water is open to the public during the summer.

You can also explore the historic downtown area of Berkeley Springs, which has an up-and-coming art scene, a variety of dining options and local boutiques. You can even travel further into the eastern panhandle to visit famous attractions, like Harpers Ferry National Historical Park. This area overlooks the gorgeous town of Harpers Ferry at the confluence of the Potomac and Shenandoah rivers, where several outfitters offer whitewater rafting and tubing in season.

A historic place to stay and play

At the end of the day, you need a warm place to sleep. Cacapon has several unique options for you and your family. As one of several state parks built by the Civilian Conservation Corps during the 1930s, Cacapon has historic cabins and buildings, including The Old Inn — the first lodge in the West Virginia State Parks system.

This historic building recaptures a Colonial atmosphere with hand-hewn log beams and guest rooms with tongue-and-groove walls of chestnut and knotty pine. It has 12 bedrooms and eight full baths and sleeps a maximum of 32 — spacious enough for your whole group, but cozy enough for everyone to enjoy some quality time together.

Additional accommodations at Cacapon include a full-service lodge (currently undergoing renovations to make it even bigger and better!) and four types of guest cabins, several of which are pet-friendly. So, bring your animal companions along for the trip. They’ll love Cacapon just as much as you will.

“The CCC-era cabins are delightful and cozy, extremely clean, and well maintained…The park is only two hours from Washington, D.C. yet seems a world away. Even when the park is full it feels peaceful and far from the bustle of people.”
