Elk Management Tours at Chief Logan State Park
After more than a 100-year absence from the Mountain State, elk are making a comeback in West Virginia and you have a chance to see these incredible animals in a natural habitat.
Our guided elk tours are the best way to learn about the history of elk management in West Virginia and what the West Virginia Division of Natural Resources is doing to make sure the growing elk herd thrives in its new home.
Tours start at Chief Logan Lodge and spots book up fast, so make a reservation as soon as possible. While there is no guarantee you will see or hear elk, park naturalist and tour leader Lauren Cole makes these tours a fun experience you don’t want to miss!
This excursion involves walking up to 2-3 miles.

It’s a guided wildlife experience where you’ll learn about the history of elk in West Virginia, current management efforts, and the ongoing restoration program.
The elk tours at Chief Logan State Park take place every Saturday and Sunday weekend in September and October except for October 12 and October 26.
While elk sightings are common, they aren’t guaranteed. Your guide will take you to areas with the best chance of viewing or hearing elk.
Tours are led by park naturalist Lauren Cole, who shares insights about elk behavior, habitat, and conservation.
All tours begin at Chief Logan Lodge.
Expect to walk 2–3 miles during the excursion.
