From skiing to sledding, plan your snowy adventure at West Virginia state parks

Experience the magic of winter at West Virginia state parks and forests. Whether you prefer snowshoeing through a peaceful forest or rocketing down a mountain ski slope, there’s a winter sport in Almost Heaven you’re sure to love. Check out some of the activities available at these parks:

Blackwater Falls State Park

Blackwater Falls is home to the longest sled run on the East Coast—a thrilling ride that’s sure to be a hit with children and adults alike. Race down a quarter mile of fresh snow, then hitch a ride back up the hill on the Magic Carpet conveyor belt. The sled run is popular and often sells out, so grab your tickets in advance before you go!

For those who prefer quiet contemplation in the snow-blanketed forest, many of the trails at Blackwater are suitable for snowshoes and cross-country skis. Equipment can be rented at the park.

Canaan Valley Resort State Park

When people think of winter getaway, Canaan Valley Resort ticks off all the boxes. Downhill skiing and snowboarding? Check. Snowshoeing and cross-country skiing? Check. Tubing? Check. There’s even an ice-skating rink! All the equipment for these activities can be rented from the park.

The park’s 47 trails provide skiing and snowboarding options for all ages and experience levels. If you’re new to the sport, you can sign up for lessons from an experienced instructor.

If skiing isn’t your thing, check out the tubing park. At 1,200 feet long, Canaan’s multi-lane snow tube park is one of the longest in the Mid-Atlantic and features a conveyor belt for quick ascent back to the top of the hill.

In winter, the golf course is made available to cross-country skiers and snowshoeing, and over 20 miles of marked and ungroomed trails are open to the sport. (Cross-country trails are natural snow dependent with no trail fees.)

For the romantics and the young at heart, there’s the magical allure of ice skating. An outdoor, covered ice rink behind the main lodge building offers an unbeatable view of Canaan Valley and the Allegheny Mountains

Pipestem Resort State Park

With its new zipline canopy tour and adventure lake, Pipestem Resort is fast becoming known as nature’s playground. But its recreational activities don’t stop at three seasons. In the winter, when snow blankets the resort’s rolling hills, it’s time to break out the sleds and cross-country skis. Bring your own equipment or check with Pipestem’s Pro Shop for rental information.
