Stars, Wings, and Nature Things: Blackwater Falls

Mid-August finds these weekend programs and activities planned at Blackwater Falls on August 12-14, 2022. The nature team welcomes you. Join us.

FRIDAY, August 12, 2022

Nature Center Open: 10:30 a.m. -5:00 p.m.
Make a Constellation and Stars Craft anytime today for Free in Harold Walters Nature Center.

Note: Peak Night for Perseids is August 12 into the morning of August 13, 2022.
About 9:20 p.m. to 5:30 a.m. The Moon may wash out all but the brightest but the brightest

10:30 a.m. — Bust n’ Boom Talk
Join the park naturalist in Blackwater Lodge Lobby for an introduction to the history of the area. No walking. About 45 minutes. YPP

11:30 a.m. — Herb Garden Craft
Create a herb garden for your window at home while learning about some herb use and herbal teas with naturalist, Kenny, and staff. YPP

1:30 p.m. — Leaf a Long Hike
Join the seasonal naturalist, Kenny, to learn about tree identification and more along Balsam Fir Trail. About 1.5 miles, 90 minutes. YPP

2:00 p.m. — Butterflies and Wings
Join park naturalist, Paulita, to listen to the story of our state butterfly, the Monarch. We may even stroll outside to look for butterflies. Create a pair of child sized cardboard “stained glass” butterfly wings during this program. The use of a utility knife requires an adult to assist their child. This is such a fun program. Join us. About 1 hour. Craft fee: $4.00 YPP

3:00 p.m. — Celestial Wind Chime Craft
Join the staff to paint a windchime. Craft fee: $3.00

SATURDAY, August 13, 2022

Nature Center Open: 10:30 a.m. -5:00 p.m.
Make a Constellation and Stars Craft anytime today for Free in Harold Walters Nature Center.

10:30 a.m. — Who was Porte Crayon?
Find naturalist, Kenny in the Bus/Falls overflow graveled parking area near the park intersection for a short walk to Blackwater Falls . Along the way, learn a little history of the area and hear about Porte Crayon adventures. About 1 hour. YPP

11:30 a.m. — Gingerbread House Fun
Join the staff to put together a wooden gingerbread house and then stain and decorate. Craft fee: $3.00

1:00 p.m. — I Spy Way up High
Let’s create a weather window, learn about clouds then go outside (weather permitting) to lay back and observe clouds while using our imagination to create fun shapes. About one hour, with a little walking. YPP

2:00 p.m. — Bugs & Bees
Backyard Bugs Nature Film & Save the Bees Bracelet Craft. Join in at the nature center.
Craft fee: $2.00 YPP

3:00 p.m. — Nature Stroll
Join seasonal naturalist, Kenny, to stroll around the nature center investigating anything nature then to make a picture with the power of the sun. FREE YPP

SUNDAY August 14, 2022

Nature Center Open: 10:30 a.m. -5:00 p.m.

11:00 a.m. Natural Cordage & Basket Craft
Naturalist Kenny enjoys teaching some basics about creating cordage from plants. Yes! Plants. Afterwards, participants have an opportunity to weave a small basket. Craft fee: $15.00. Limited to 12 participants and payment required to reserve your spot. About 1 hour. YPP

11:30 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. — Twisted Tie Dye
Join the staff to create your own Blackwater Falls Souvenir t-shirt. Sizes limited to first come basis. Adult sizes $10.00, Youth sizes $8.00.

1:30 p.m. — Friendship Bracelet
Join the staff to weave a single bracelet for free.

3:00 p.m. — Turkey Suncatcher Craft with the attendant.

Color in a suncatcher turkey window decoration using colorful suncatcher paint. Craft fee: $1.00

3:30 p.m. — Let’s Talk Turkey w/ Kenny
This program is about the wild turkey success story for conservation.
About 45 minutes. YPP
