Join park naturalist Paulita Cousin, Kenny Noland, Brittany, Victor and Amie for these weekend activities including crafts, walks, and fire building skills.

MONDAY, August 22, 2022

10:00 a.m.
Dig It!
It’s a great beginners presentation about the geology of the Blackwater Falls State Park and “The “Mountain State”. Meet at Pendleton Point Overlook. About 45 minutes. Some
walking. Great views. YPP

11:00 a.m. – 1:00 p.m.
Twisted Tie– Dye
Join the staff to create your own Blackwater Falls Souvenir t-shirt (white, black or purple shirts). Adult size shirts. $10.00, Youth size shirts $8.00

1:00 p.m.
Friendship Bracelet
Braid a bracelet using embroidery floss. Not recommended for very young children. FREE

2:00 p.m.
Natural Cordage
Seasonal Naturalist Kenny Noland shares some basics about creating cordage from plants. About 30 minutes. YPP

Weather Nature Film & Rain Gauge Craft
Join the staff to watch this film that takes you on a whirlwind tour of Earth’s turbulent atmosphere and reveals the forces that make the day fair or foul. Includes the creation of a rain gauge. Craft fee: $2.00. About 1 hour. YPP

1:00 p.m.
Black Bear Aware
Join the park naturalist in Blackwater Falls Lodge to learn about our state mammal and how to keep the bear and you safe in bear habitat. About 1 hour. YPP. Afterwards, replica bear claw craft will be available to purchase for $2.00

2:30 p.m.
Butterflies & Craft Wings
Join the park naturalist to listen about our state butterfly and perhaps attempt to look outside for butterflies found in the area. Afterwards, create a pair of child sized cardboard “stained glass” wings. The use of a utility knife requires an adult to assist their child. Making wings is so much fun! About 1 hour. Craft fee: $3.00 YPP

WEDNESDAY, August 24, 2022
The Nature Center Open: 10:30 a.m. -5:00 p.m.

9:00 a.m.
Naturalist Loop Walk
Join park naturalist Paulita at the trailhead of Elakala Trail (by Blackwater Lodge) for an interpretive walk along a section of three trails: Elakala, Balanced and Shay. About 90 minutes, 2 miles. YPP

1:00 p.m.
The Bee Movie and Candle Making
Join the staff to create a candle then watch a movie while it solidifies. Craft fee:
$4.00. About 1.5 hours. YPP

3:00 p.m.
Sit n’ go Nature- Raptors of West Virginia
Enjoy an introduction to raptors found in West Virginia (no live birds) by the park naturalist. About 45 minutes. YPP

THURSDAY, August 25, 2022
The Nature Center Open: 10:30 a.m. -5:00 p.m.

Edible and Medicinal Plant Walk
Kenny Noland leads this exceptional walk and shares his insight about a few plants along a short hike that has edible or medicinal qualities. About 1 hour. About 1/2 mile. YPP

All Activities meet at Harold Walters Nature Center unless otherwise noted in description.
Sunday interdenominational worship at Blackwater Falls Lodge at 9:00 a.m.
