Marching thru July: Cacapon

We march through July with more planned activities at Cacapon Resort State Park, July 5 – 9 2023. Activities are conducted or begin at the nature center unless noted.

WEDNESDAY July 5, 2023

10:00AM Fishing 101
Let’s throw a line out! Learn how to tie a hook, cast a line, and maybe catch your first fish. Poles and bait provided or bring your own. YPP

1:00PM Fire Building
Learn some different fire building techniques and how to start a fire with flint & steel. YPP

3:30PM Knot-tying
Learn some helpful tips on tying knots for camping or while in the outdoors. YPP

THURSDAY, July 6, 2023

9:15AM Paddle Boat Tour
Take a guided park naturalist tour by water to discover park natural & cultural history. Binoculars provided. $6 per person YPP

11:00AM-12:30PM Fearless Drawing Leading to Painting Part 2:
Join our local artist and a park volunteer for a free art lesson focusing on geometric shapes of local flora & fauna. This class is free and open to all ages. Attend one session or attend the four part series on the following dates: July 27, & August 3.

1:30PM Micro-vision World
Come explore our park from a microscopic point of view. We’ll go on a small trek through the area looking at plants & animals through magnifying glasses, a stereomicroscope for items collected on hike, and a compound microscope for prepared slides. YPP

3:00PM Fantastic Fox
Learn some fun facts about the red fox, followed by a fun craft. YPP

FRIDAY, July 7, 2023

10:00AM Morning on the Mountain
Meet at Cacapon Mountain Overlook for to take in the views. Learn about the park’s geology & while doing some birding. Followed by a walk on the fire road. Binoculars provided. YPP

1:00PM Walking Stick Craft
Come and join us for this fun insect craft. YPP

2:00PM Gardening for Monarchs
These amazing butterflies are in decline and need your help. Find out what you can do and search our garden for monarch eggs. YPP

3:00PM Food Chain & Food Webs
Learn the difference producers and consumers by playing a game. YPP

4:00-6:00PM Welcome to Cacapon!
Meet the Park Naturalist at the lodge to answer any general park questions you may have or find out what amazing recreation and nature activities Cacapon has to offer. Welcome to Cacapon Resort State Park!

7:00PM Irish Road Bowling
Enjoy an afternoon of bowling! If you haven’t tried this sport, come out and see what it is all about. Check it out on WV.IRB.COM

7:45PM Evening Stroll
Meet park naturalist at the lodge front desk. Meander down the edge of the lodge lawn towards the wildflower fields following our new Blue Bird Trail. A great opportunity for photos.

8:45PM Glowstick Walk on Golf Course
Meet park naturalist on the outdoor patio of the new lodge for a fun way to end the evening! Glow sticks necklaces & bracelets provided.

SATURDAY, July 8, 2023
Nature Center Open 10:30-4:30PM

9:30AM WV Morning Melodies
Discover Cacapon’s common song birds and learn to identify them by sight and sound. Binoculars provided. YPP

11:00AM Life Cycle of a Monarch
Learn the multiple stages of life called metamorphosis. Let’s go explore the milkweed plants and look for eggs! YPP

2:00PM Stream Study
Discover what makes a stream healthy and what unlikely critters may be hiding in plain sight! You may want to bring shoes to get wet. YPP

3:00PM Forest Animal-opoly
Come and join us for this fun spin on the Monopoly Game!

7:00PM Southern Flying Squirrel: The Real Rocky
Join Dr. Peggy Shaw-McBee for a talk and power point presentation on southern flying squirrel. Presentation will be held at Cacapon Lodge!

8:30PM-9:45PM Firefly Frenzy
Did you know that WV has 21+ species of lightning bugs/fireflies? They can be differentiated among one another by the color of their flash and the pattern of their flashes. We’ll spend a little time going over their difference and then going for a night hike and see if we can find a few species. YPP

10:30AM Nature Bingo
Learn some fun facts and see who wins the challenge.

11:30AM Bobcat Talk
Learn some fun facts about the bobcat and touch a pelt. YPP

1:30PM Black Bear Game
Learn some black bear facts & play a self-guided game. YPP

2:30PM Discovery Hike
Let’s go explore and see what we find. YPP

Come and visit the Tom Ambrose Nature Center! The nature center is a great stop for all ages, showcasing exhibits on the park history and the Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC) Camp Morgan 1934-41. Other West Virginia natural exhibits include an extensive taxidermy collection of wildlife- fish, birds, fox, bobcat, mountain lion, deer, elk, and eastern grey wolf!

Also, hands-on sand displays for wildlife tracks and a new geology interactive map to design your own mountains, rivers and lakes. Take a park naturalist guided hike or join the daily activities!
