Activities for Any Age: Holly River

July includes how to measure trees, archery and fishy stuff at Holly River State Park. Join naturalist Jane Birdsong at these activities, July 6 – 8, 2023. Don’t forget the restaurant is open and hiking trails welcome your footsteps.

THURSDAY, July 6, 2023

2 pm – HOW TO MEASURE TREES
Naturalist Jane will demonstrate, then give You the opportunity to practice measuring circumference and use triangulation geometry to measure the height of trees. It sounds complicated but once you work with Jane, it makes it easy. Remember trees in your yard could be a state record in size and trees at Holly River could be also. Let’s learn how to measure trees. Meet on the park office porch. All ages welcome, family units and friends can work together. No fee to participate.

4 pm – ARCHERY
Learn to hold a bow, load arrows, target shoot & long shots. Look for the naturalist at the archery range in the game field across from the office. YPP

FRIDAY, July 7, 2023
In the morning
Naturalist Jane will be working with a large school group visiting Holly River and participating in youth activities. These activities will not be open to the public.

4 pm – ARCHERY
Learn to hold a bow, load arrows, target shoot & long shots. Look for the naturalist at the archery range in the game field across from the office. This activity is open to any age wanting to try using a bow and arrow. YPP

SATURDAY, July 8, 2023
10 am – VERY FISHY
Learn the parts of a fish, fold an origami fish to take home, YPP Then feed baby trout in our trout rearing pond. Meet the naturalist on the park office porch.

2 pm – BIRD MIGRATION CHALLENGE
Experience the hazards birds must face as Play an interactive game in Windy Gap Schoolyard. Each “bird” follows a path To reach the next rest stop. Will you make it to your summer home? YPP

4 pm – ARCHERY
Learn to hold a bow, load arrows, target shoot & long shots. Look for the naturalist at the archery range in the game field across from the park office. This activity is open to any age wanting to try using a bow and arrow. YPP

YPP – Young People for Parks centers on environmental activities that encourage youth of ages 6 – 15 to get outdoors and explore nature. Participants who attend at least 3 activities with the park naturalist and can recall in writing what they learned, are awarded a certificate and badge or other token.
