Late July Weekends: Cacapon

Unique programs at Cacapon include medicinal plant walk, Owl Pals, and Morgan County Art Council art project. Join Naturalist Valerie Chaney and summer team, Garrett, Allen and Mary and park volunteers at the nature center (unless another location is indicated), July 22-23, 2022.

Medicinal Plant Walk
Join Iris Kirsch, a Berkeley Springs based Herbalist and educator. Join her for a easy walk to identify medicinal herbs. Bring a camera or take notes, as no foraging in state parks. All
ages welcome.

Fishing 101
Meet at the Nature Center, then head out to the lake! Learn how to tie a fishing hook, then cast out! Fishing poles & worms provided (limited amount) or bring your own. (1hour) YPP

Discover the variety owls by sight and sound! What do they eat? Find out by dissecting on owl pellet! YPP

Plants, Paints, & Pigments
Join local artists with the Morgan County Arts Council for an afternoon of collecting specific items on a walk then to create your own paint brushes and create your own art masterpiece. Discover what makes a stream healthy and what unlikely critters may be hiding in plain sight! Meet at the Nature Center. You may want to bring shoes to get wet. YPP

Wildflower Meadow Walk
Meet park naturalists at the lodge for a nice evening stroll to get a close look at our park’s pollinator fields with evening colors.

Campfire Stories
Join us for songs, marshmallows and stories around the campfire. Natalya and Nate Smith, a daughter-father storytelling duo from Knoxville, TN will be sharing their love of a good tale. Come listen to some spooky and not-so-spooky stories (they will get scarier as the night goes on).

Visit the Tom Ambrose Nature Center! The nature center is a great stop for all ages, showcasing exhibits on the park’s history and the Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC) Camp Morgan 1934-41.

Other West Virginia natural exhibits include an extensive taxidermy collection of wildlife- fish, birds, fox, bobcat, mountain lion, deer, elk, and eastern grey wolf! Also, hands-on sand displays for wildlife tracks and a new geology interactive map to design your own mountains, rivers and lakes. Take a park naturalist guided hike or join the daily activities! The Nature Center is open daily from 9AM-5PM.
