June into July: Holly River
June 29, 2023 – July 1, 2023
Holly River State Park is packed with activities and fun. Visitors are encouraged to take advantage of these programs, particularly basic archery, Fireflies, and ‘Very Fishy’ (learning part of a fish via origami.) Your host is Jane Birdsong, Summer/Master Naturalist, June 29 – July 1, 2023.
THURSDAY, June 20, 2023
2 pm – HIKE OAKRIDGE TRAIL & return on Ridge Road Trail. (2 miles, 3 hrs)
This trail has a long steep ascent, but is beautiful once you reach the ridgetop where
you can see for miles. Bring water, wear sturdy shoes. Hiking stick or trek poles
helpful. Meet on the office porch by 1:40 or at trailhead near Baseball field @ 2 pm.
FRIDAY, June 30, 2023
10 am – FIREFLIES – WHAT MAKES THEM GLOW?
Learn about their evolutionary history and how to take part in a firefly census. Windy Gap Schoolyard YPP
2 pm – VERY FISHY
Learn the parts of a fish, fold an origami fish to take home, then feed baby trout in our trout rearing pond (YPP) Meet naturalist in old Pavilion
4 pm – ARCHERY
Learn to hold a bow, load arrows, target shoot & long shots.
Look for naturalist at archery range in the game field across from office. YPP
SATURDAY July 1, 2023
10 am – BUTTERFLIES & MOTHS
Learn the subtle differences between these 2 flying
Insects, color one to take home. Windy Gap Schoolyard/ Balli shelter if rainy. YPP
2 pm – SEARCH for CREEK CRITTERS
Learn the life cycle of insects who spend some
years as swimmers, then mature into flying insects. Help us collect & identify them
with nets & magnifying lenses. Wear shoes that can get wet. Look for naturalist in
Windy Gap Schoolyard down by the stream. YPP
4 pm – ARCHERY
Learn to hold a bow, load arrows, target shoot & long shots.
Look for the naturalist at the archery range in the game field across from the office. YPP
YPP – Young People for Parks centers on environmental activities that encourage youth of
ages 6 – 16 to get outdoors and explore nature. Participants who attend at least 3 activities
with the park naturalist and can recall in writing what they learned, are awarded a certificate
and badge or other token.
