June Activities: Holly River
June 22, 2023 – June 24, 2023
Holly River State Park is always fun to visit. Visitors are encouraged to take advantage of these programs, particularly Fireflies, Dragonflies and beginning archery. Your host is Jane Birdsong, Summer/Master Naturalist, June 22-24, 2023.
THURSDAY, June 22, 2023
2 pm – BLACK BEARS
Learn new discoveries & fascinating facts about WV’s largest mammal. Shake hands with a bear paw & play a game to learn more! Windy Gap Schoolyard (Old Pavilion if rainy) YPP
4 pm – NATURE CRAFT
Peanut butter-Pinecone Bird feeders, Make one to take home & feed your feathered friends. All materials provided. Balli Shelter
FRIDAY, June 23, 2023
10 am – FIREFLIES – WHAT MAKES THEM GLOW?
Learn about their evolutionary history and how to take part in a firefly census. Windy Gap Schoolyard – YPP
2 pm – INCREDIBLE JOURNEY
Become a water droplet as you move through all the places Water can be on planet EARTH – a very active game. Learn while having fun in Windy Gap Schoolyard/ Old Pavilion if rainy YPP
4 pm – ARCHERY
Learn to hold a bow, load arrows, target shoot & long shots. Look for the naturalist at the archery range in the game field across from the office. YPP
SATURDAY, June 24, 2023
10 am – HIKE HIGH ROCK TRAIL with Naturalist Jane.
Meet on office porch @ 10, or at the bridge below Cabin 9 at 10:10. Wear sturdy shoes, bring water, 1.5 miles Walking stick or trek poles helpful in steep terrain. YPP
2 pm – DRAGONFLIES
Meet the fighter jets of the insect world – learn about their
amazing abilities & make a beautiful one to take home. Meet naturalist in
Windy Gap Schoolyard / Balli Shelter if rainy. YPP
4 pm – ARCHERY
Learn to hold a bow, load arrows, target shoot & long shots.
Look for the naturalist at the archery range in the game field across from the office. YPP
YPP – Young People for Parks centers on environmental activities that encourage youth of
ages 6 – 16 to get outdoors and explore nature. Participants who attend at least 3 activities
with the park naturalist and can recall in writing what they learned, are awarded a certificate
and badge or other token.
