Farewell to July Activities: Pipestem

July 28, 2022 - July 31, 2022

Activities and programs July 27 – 31, 2022 at Pipestem vary from a Moth Night and a craft show to how to plan and prep for a hike. The nature center is open daily from 11:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. There is no charge to participate in activities unless indicated Activities begin at the Nature Center unless indicated. Public and park guests are welcomed.

Moth Night
Meet Julie at the Nature Center for some moth watching. She will have a black light and white sheet set up to attract moths. Bring a flashlight and don’t forget your phone or camera to capture the moth moments. You may also want to bring a chair if you have one. In the event of rain this program may have to be cancelled. (1 hour) YPP

Plan a Hike
Meet Bob at the Nature Center for ideas about what to prepare for when you plan a hike. Maps will be available if you have questions about what trail may be best for you. Bob is an entertaining speaker. Be prepared to enjoy this program. YPP

An Extraordinary Ordinary Moth
Meet Julie in the Activity Shelter behind the Nature Center to hear a storybook story about a moth. Then color a picture of a moth any color you want. A great activity for kids or adults who love moths. YPP

Craft Show/Flea Market: Pipestem
Summer fun includes outdoor shopping at a craft show/flea-style market at Pipestem Resort State Park on Saturday July 30, 2022. Located at the Amphitheater parking lot, the market is from 9:00 a.m. until 3:00 p.m. The event is open to the public to attend and check out the wares. There is no charge to attend.

Interested vendors should contact Nicole Miller at nicole.m.miller@wv.gov to register. Vendors may set up starting at 7:30 a.m. Vendor set up fee is $25 for a 9×18 space. Space must be reserved in advance.

Dogwood Hike
Meet Bob at the Nature Center for a little exercise while hiking along the Dogwood Trail. (1 hour)

2:00 PM
Nature Hunt
Meet Bob at the Nature Center. He will hand out a list of objects outside to look for in Nature. (1/2 – 1 hour) YPP

5:30 PM
Hummingbirds: Magic in the Air
Meet Julie at the Activity Shelter behind the Nature Center to talk about this amazing little bird and hopefully view some at the feeder. YPP

Country Roads Walk
Meet Bob at Park Headquarters to walk along the road and into the woods to learn some pre-park history.

National Moth Week at Pipestem
National Moth Week celebrates the beauty, life cycles, and habitats of moths. “Moth-ers” of all ages and abilities are encouraged to learn about, observe and document moths in their backyards, parks, and neighborhoods. National Moth Week is being held, worldwide, during the last full week of July. NMW offers everyone, everywhere a unique opportunity to become a Citizen Scientist and contribute scientific data about moths. Through partnerships with major online biological data depositories, NMW participants can help map moth distribution and provide needed information on other life history aspects around the globe.

Pipestem’s Moth Night are on Saturday, July 30 and Sunday, July 31, 2022
