Farewell July Activities + Moth Night: Holly River

Naturalist Jane Birdsong invites one and all to activities at Holly River State Park July 27 – 31, 2022. This is National Moth Week and there are four “moth night” activities at Holly River. Attendance is free. Participation is fun. Because, by golly, it’s Holly!

WEDNESDAY – July 27, 2022
9:30 pm
MOTH NIGHT is at Campground 1 on Wednesday. Look for the illuminated white sheet, as we hope to attract some of the largest and most interesting night flying insects. (YPP)

THURSDAY – July 28, 2022
Special Program!

STORYTELLER
Linda Durett will present a historical adventure as “Station Master’ on the Underground Railroad, helping enslaved people escape bondage, while traveling the Staunton > Parkersburg Turnpike. Meet her in the Old Pavilion.

4 pm
ARCHERY
Learn to hold a bow, load arrows, target shoot & long shots. Look for the naturalist at the archery range in the game field across from the office.

10 pm
MOTH NIGHT is at Campground 2 on Thursday.
Look for the illuminated white sheet, as we hope to attract some of the largest and most interesting night flying insects. (YPP)

FRIDAY, JULY 29, 2022

SNAKES
Which 2 are venomous? Learn to identify the copperhead and rattlesnake with authentic replicas, and why we consider all snakes very helpful. Balli Shelter (YPP)

BLACK BEARS
Learn amazing things about our largest WV mammal. (YPP) Meet the Naturalist in Windy Gap Schoolyard to play a game where YOU are the bear.

4 pm
ARCHERY
Learn to hold a bow, load arrows, target shoot & long shots. Look for the naturalist at the archery range in the game field across from the office.

10 pm
MOTH NIGHT
Moth Night is at Campground 3 on Friday.

SATURDAY, JULY 30, 2022
10 am
HIKE HIGH ROCK TRAIL
Meet the naturalist on the office porch at 9:45 am or at the bridge between the tennis court and Cabin 9 at 10 am. Bring water, wear sturdy shoes. Hiking sticks or trek poles are helpful. This is a beautiful hike. 1 ½ – 2 hours.

SPECIAL PROGRAM
THREE RIVERS AVIAN CENTER
TRAC presents the “Wings of Wonder – Birds of Prey” program in the Anderson Center at 2:00, July 30, 2022. We ‘ll see at least six live educational birds as Ron and Wendy talk about each raptor, their habitats and habits. Don’t miss this presentation. Questions are welcomed. Open to the public. No fee to attend. Family and youth friendly. Sorry, no pets at the program. (YPP)

SUNDAY, July 31, 2022

TREE ID WALK
Meet Jane the Naturalist on the office porch for a short stroll around the building to learn some of our Holly River trees by leaf shape and bark. Make a rubbing of your favorites to take home. (YPP)

All Naturalist Programs at Holly River State Park are FREE to everyone! YPP (Young People for Parks) encourages youth of ages 6 – 16 to go outdoors and explore nature in our state parks. Completion of 3 naturalist programs in one week will earn a certificate; completion of 5 YPP programs will earn a patch.

If you are interested in learning more about the WV Master Naturalist Program, Naturalist Jane is involved and an active member. She can answer your questions.
