Birdsong’s Summer Farewell Activities: Holly River

The summer season is winding down for planned outdoor activities with Master Naturalist Jane Birdsong. Enjoy participating in the crafts, hikes, and games scheduled August 25 – 27, 2022 at Holly River State Park.
THURSDAY, August 25, 2022

NATURE CRAFT
Pinecone Bird Feeders
Meet naturalist in Windy Gap Schoolyard (Balli Shelter if rainy) to make and take home a bird feeder to hang in your yard. All materials provided.
7 pm
WANDERING MINSTREL in campgrounds 1 & 2.
Naturalist Jane will stroll through and sing by your campfire if you would like to hear a song or to sing-along.
FRIDAY, August 26, 2022

HIKE RIDGE ROAD TRAIL
Hike Ridge Road Trail to Tenskwatawa Falls & Back on Wilderness. This loop will be approximately 5.5 miles, and will require sturdy shoes, water and lunch. Hiking Stick or Trek poles are useful and recommended. If you like to hike, this is a rewarding hike. Estimated time 4.5 hrs. Meet on the office porch before 10 am, or at the baseball diamond past campground 4, at 10:15 am.

Orb Weaving Be like a spider and weave your own orb web. Meet the naturalist in the Old Pavilion. (YPP) Materials provided.

TREE ID WALK (YPP)
Meet the naturalist on the office porch for a short stroll around the building to learn some of our Holly River trees by leaf shape and bark. Make a rubbing of your favorites to take home. All ages welcomed.
2 pm
BIRD MIGRATION CHALLENGE (YPP)
Experience the hazards birds must face as we play an interactive game in Windy Gap Schoolyard. Each “bird” follows a path to reach the next rest stop. Will you make it to your summer home?
4 pm
VERY FISHY
Learn the parts of a fish, fold an origami fish to take home, then feed baby trout in our trout rearing pond. (YPP) Meet naturalist in Old Pavilion
All Naturalist Programs are FREE to everyone! YPP (Young People for Parks) encourages youth of ages 6 – 16 to go outdoors and explore nature in our state parks. Completion of 3 naturalist programs in one week will earn a certificate; completion of 5 YPP programs will earn a patch.
