Astronomy, Saw Mill Demo, Turkey Talk: Bluestone

From primitive fire starting to dissecting owl pellets, weekends at Bluestone State Park are extra special with activities that focus on the outdoors and nature pursuits. Join park naturalist and heritage craftsman Jonathan Lipscomb July August 25-27, 2023 at these planned activities.

FRIDAY, August 25, 2023
5-6pm Primitive Fire Starting
Join the naturalist at the fire shelter behind the events building to learn the basics of flint and steel fire starting. All ages welcome. Learn a new frontier skill. *ypp

7-9pm Weekly Campfire
Let’s meet at the fire shelter below the events building to swap stories, relax, and learn basic campfire cooking skills. Cast iron cooking. Servings are $2 each

9-10pm Fireflies and Astronomy
The events building is the place to gather to watch the fireflies and the stars. Families welcomed. Open to the public as well as park overnight guests. *ypp ‘

SATURDAY, AUGUST 26, 2023
10am Sawmill Demo
You’ll find this demonstration at the fire shelter behind the events building to see how lumber is produced.

4pm Dip Candles
You can create a one of a kind dip candle to keep as a souvenir. Candles are $1 exact change accepted on site or you may prepay at the office.

6-8pm Tye Dye
Let’s create a one of a kind souvenir with Tye Dye. Shirts are $10 for a park shirt with the logo on it, $5 if you bring your own.

SUNDAY, August 27, 2023
9am Talking Turkey
Yelps. Clucks. Cackles Purrs and Gobble. Meet the naturalist behind the activities building to learn about the wild turkey and see if we can talk with them *ypp [ Learn more about wild turkeys at the National Wild Turkey Foundation website: www.nwtf.org ]

11am Eagle Point Nature Hike
Join me at the Overlook on the park road to take a scenic hike along the park’s newest trail – Eagle Point. This trail is one mile each way. Please wear long pants, closed toed shoes, and bringing water is recommended.

3pm Owl pellets
Join me behind the events building to learn about the diet and hunting patterns of our local owl population. Help us create some bone boards for the park.

6-8pm Tye Dye
If you missed the Saturday activity, you can still create a one of a kind souvenir with Tye Dye today. Shirts are $10 for a park shirt with the logo on it, $5 if you bring your own.

*ypp are young people for parks programs. These programs are focused on fun education for ages 6-16. Although, all ages are welcome to attend.

** All children under 12 must be accompanied by an adult
