A fun-filled June weekend is planned with activities at Cacapon Resort State Park, June 17 – 20, 2023. Activities are conducted or begin at the nature center unless noted.

SATURDAY, June 17, 2023
Nature Center Open 10:30AM-6PM

9:30PM Woodpecker Wow!
Learn Cacapon’s common woodpeckers by sight & sound. Followed by a short walk, binoculars provided. YPP

1:00PM Fantastic Fox
Learn some fun facts about the red fox, followed by a fun craft. YPP

2:30PM Stream Study
Discover what makes a stream healthy and what unlikely critters may be hiding in plain sight! You may want to bring shoes to get wet. YPP

3:30PM Seek-ing Nature
Take a discovery hike and learn all about this fun mobile app that helps you identify everything from plants, trees, wildflower & wildlife! YPP

7:00PM-8:30PM Cacapon Campfire
Help build our campfire after learning several fire building techniques. Afterwards enjoy some
campfire fun & marshmallows! YPP

8:45PM-9:45PM Firefly Frenzy
Did you know that WV has 21+ species of lightning bugs/fireflies? Seriously!. They can be differentiated among one another by the color of their flash and the pattern of their flashes. We’ll spend a little time going over their differences and then going for a night hike and see if we can find a few species. YPP

Join our summer naturalist on a short walk to discover the highlights of Cacapon in June. You will see & hear a variety of birds, trees, & other wildlife. YPP

Discover what mammals are featured this month! Learn all about them, followed by a fun activity. YPP

It’s Juneteenth!

This class will help increase balance, flexibility, and focus on connection to mind, body, & spirit. Location lodge.

10:00AM Feathered Friends
During this hour watch a short film, learn some common sights & sounds of birds, followed by bird bingo. YPP

TUESDAY, June 20, 2023
Happy West Virginia Day!

10:00AM WV Snakes
Learn helpful ways to tell if a snake is venomous or non-venomous. Learn some fun facts about common WV snakes. (No live snakes in program) YPP

11:00AM Ridge Trail Ramble
Take a guided hike on this fun 1.5 mile moderate trail. YPP

1:30PM The CCC Boys: A West Virginia Legacy
The CCC boys left a legacy that can still be enjoyed by all in our beautiful WV forests and
parks. (30 min film) Followed by a 30 minute history walk. YPP

Come and visit the Tom Ambrose Nature Center! The nature center is a great stop for all ages, showcasing exhibits on the park history and the Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC) Camp Morgan 1934-41. Other West Virginia natural exhibits include an extensive taxidermy collection of wildlife- fish, birds, fox, bobcat, mountain lion, deer, elk, and eastern grey wolf!
