12th annual Eagle Survey of the Pipestem Area

Saturday, March 2. The annual survey of the skies and waterways for golden and bald eagles in the Pipestem area occurs two times in 2019. The January survey recorded 58 eagles sighted over the 4 hour period.

Volunteers are assigned to monitoring stations at various areas along the survey route to watch and record sightings.

Pipestem Naturalist Julie McQuade will take calls and emails from interested individuals for this survey and compile a contact list for the survey team. The team will then assign survey sites and contact individuals with survey info, maps, etc.; paring novice and avid birders. Julie’s email is Julie.A.McQuade@wv.gov or call 304-466-1800.

Individuals should meet at McKeever Lodge at Pipestem Resort State Park by 9:15 a.m. This survey group will be stationed at the Pits at the mouth of the Bluestone River. It is about a 20 minute drive to this site. All teams meet at Dairy Queen after the survey concludes to compile data.

Please contact Julie to indicate participation by February 27, 2019 to survey at the Pit area. Or contact Jim Phillips, retired naturalist at Pipestem,continues to coordinate this area wide event along with volunteers known as the Eagle Brigade. Anyone interested in eagles and assisting in the survey are welcomed.
