48 hours of History and Fun at Cass Scenic Railroad State Park

Relive the golden days of rail travel with a trip back in time to Cass Scenic Railroad State Park. Once home to a thriving lumber mill, the historic town of Cass attracts train buffs and outdoor lovers alike who are drawn to the beauty of the Allegheny Mountains. Steeped in history and blessed with endless natural beauty, this area of West Virginia’s Potomac Highlands offers plenty of recreational opportunities for the whole family.

Day 1

Start your adventure with an overnight stay in one of Cass’ restored company houses. These charming, two-story cottages can accommodate up to 14 people. Book your lodging soon because these houses fill up quickly. You can find additional lodging at Watoga State Park, about 45 minutes from Cass. Rent a cozy cabin or reserve a campsite and take advantage of Watoga’s numerous hiking trails and scenic overlooks while you’re there.

Of course, no trip to Cass is complete without a ride on the park’s steam-driven locomotives, which climb Cheat Mountain to reveal sweeping views of the valley stretching out far below. Train rides take passengers to Bald Knob, the third-highest point in West Virginia, or to Whittaker Station, the site of a restored logging camp. Both trains stop for layovers on the mountain, where you’ll have the opportunity to explore the area and take in the awe-inspiring scenery.

While you’re touring Cass, be sure to drop by the Company Store where you can shop for souvenirs and grab a bite to eat at Shays Restaurant and Soda Fountain. During the summer you can also enjoy the concert series Pickin’ in the Park. Craving more local history? Check out the artisans co-op and the Cass Historical Theater and Historical Museum, one of the country’s only authentic railroading museums.

Day 2

Cast a line! Set alongside the rippling waters of the Greenbrier River, Cass offers some of the best fishing opportunities around for trout and smallmouth bass. Nearby, the area of Spruce and the Shaver’s Fork of the Cheat River are known as some of the premier fishing areas in the state. Visit www.wvfish.com to get your fishing license and to explore more angling inspiration.

Take in the scenery with a leisurely bike ride on the Greenbrier River Trail. The 78-mile rail trail passes through Cass, showcasing the pastoral scenery and charming small towns of Almost Heaven. Don’t have your own bike? No worries; mountain bikes and e-bikes are available for rent at the Company Store.

As you wrap up your stay, make time for a visit at one or more of the amazing attractions near Cass. Reach for the stars at Green Bank Observatory, home to the world’s largest fully steerable radio telescope. View towering rock formations at Beartown State Park.
