Plan your group get-together at a WV state park
Summer and fall are the perfect seasons for reunions, weddings and other get-togethers. Plan to host your event at a West Virginia state park or forest, where your guests can enjoy beautiful scenery and a wide range of outdoor recreation in Almost Heaven. Here are a few venues you can choose from:
Modern new facilities
North Bend State Park and Twin Falls Resort State Park added new picnic shelters in 2021 and they are perfect for meetings and receptions.
The shelter at Twin Falls can accommodate up to 100 people and has electricity, running water and WiFi. Amenities include two restrooms and an attached kitchen with a refrigerator and stove. There are also two large charcoal grills. The park’s nature center and a 9-hole disc golf course are nearby. The shelter can be rented on its own or can be rented along with the ballfield and/or amphitheater.
North Bend also has a new picnic shelter. It’s within walking distance of the lodge and has 15 picnic tables as well as electricity, running water and WiFi. This shelter features a fully equipped kitchen, two attached restrooms and a firepit. Mini golf can be added to your event for an additional fee.
A great place to ‘stage’ your event
Those looking to hold a ceremony should consider renting the amphitheater at Camp Creek State Park and Forest. A rental includes 20 picnic tables and a gazebo. Behind the stage there is a small kitchen with refrigerator, stove and sinks with running hot and cold water. A sound system may be rented for an additional fee. If you need additional space, the adjacent picnic shelter also can be rented. It has electrical outlets and lighting.
Best views in the valley
The stunning scenery at Canaan Valley Resort State Park sets the mood for a romantic wedding, where guests can ride the chairlift to the top of Bald Knob for a mountaintop ceremony. A mix of indoor and outdoor venues — from Bear Paw Lodge to a large outdoor pavilion — creates plenty of options for your event. Catering is available from park services. Your party also might enjoy group activities, such as sporting clays for adults or the turtle slide tube ride for kids.
Reunion cruise
The Island Belle sternwheeler, which transports visitors to Blennerhassett Island Historical State Park, can be rented for chartered tours. The sternwheeler holds 149 passengers and has seating on the upper and lower decks. It is a perfect venue for a sunset dinner cruise on the Ohio River.
