Beartown State Park

Beartown State Park is a natural area of 107 acres located on the eastern summit of Droop Mountain near Hillsboro, West Virginia. It offers a boardwalk for visitors to admire the unusual rock formations and overhanging cliffs. There are interpretive signs along the boardwalk that provide insight into the ecology of the area.

Cass Scenic Railroad State Park

Located in the historic town of Cass, the Cass Scenic Railroad transports passengers on a vintage locomotive to a time when logging was a way of life in Pocahontas County. Restored company buildings have been refurbished and are available for overnight stays. A Company Store features a gift shop and restaurant for a unique dining experience. Don’t forget to check out the Cass Historical Theater and Museum, one of America’s only authentic lumber railroading museums.

Cranberry Glades Botanical Area

The Cranberry Glades is the largest area of bogs, or acidic wetlands, in West Virginia. An outing to the botanical area will allow you to see a unique and exotic ecosystem on 750 acres of lush land.

Greenbrier River Trail

The Greenbrier River Trail is a favorite for hikers, bikers, cross-country skiers, anglers and horseback riders. It is a 78-mile former railroad with impeccable views of some of West Virginia’s most remote areas. Much of its length closely mirrors the Greenbrier River, with peaks of the Allegheny Mountains.

Monongahela National Forest

Outdoor adventures at Monongahela include back country camping, hiking, mountain biking, fishing and wildlife viewing. Camping and picnic areas are located throughout the forest and will provide great fun for your family or friends.

Seneca State Forest

Seneca is the oldest state forest in West Virginia. It borders the beautiful Greenbrier River in Pocahontas County. Visitors enjoy tent camping or rustic cabin stays and outdoor recreation such as hiking, fishing and hunting. The main attraction is the 65-foot Thorny Mountain Fire Tower. Guests can stay overnight in the tower for sweeping sunset views overlooking the forest.
