Allegheny Trail

Running about five miles through Calvin Price State Forest and Watoga State Park, the Allegheny Trail is part of a backpack trail system, extending from its northern terminus near Blackwater Falls State Park in Tucker County to its intersection with the famed Appalachian Trail near the West Virginia and Virginia border in Monroe County.

Beartown State Park

Beartown State Park is a natural area of 107 acres located on the eastern summit of Droop Mountain near Hillsboro, West Virginia. It offers a boardwalk for visitors to admire the unusual rock formations and overhanging cliffs. There are interpretive signs along the boardwalk that provide insight into the ecology of the area.

Cass Scenic Railroad State Park

Located in the historic town of Cass, the Cass Scenic Railroad transports passengers on a vintage locomotive to a time when logging was a way of life in Pocahontas County. Restored company buildings have been refurbished and are available for overnight stays. The Cass Company Store features a gift shop and restaurant for a unique dining experience. Don’t forget to check out the Cass Historical Theater and Museum, one of America’s only authentic lumber railroading museums.

Droop Mountain Battlefield State Park

Droop Mountain Battlefield State Park is in the Greenbrier River Valley north of Lewisburg and is the site of West Virginia’s last significant Civil War battle. It features a museum, day park facilities, hiking trails and a popular lookout tower.

Greenbrier River Trail

The Greenbrier River Trail is a favorite for hikers, bikers, cross-country skiers, anglers and horseback riders. It is a 78-mile former railroad with impeccable views of some of West Virginia’s most remote areas. Much of its length closely mirrors the Greenbrier River, with peaks of the Allegheny Mountains.

Monongahela National Forest

Visitors to this beautiful forest will enjoy breathtaking and iconic mountain vistas, peaceful country roads, gently flowing streams and glimpses of the many species of plants and animals that inhabit the West Virginia forest.

Watoga State Park

This is West Virginia’s largest state park, featuring over 10,000 acres packed to the brim with recreational activities like hiking, swimming, fishing and boating. Vacation cabins are open year-round while Classic and Legacy cabins are seasonal. The 38-unit Beaver Creek campground is open from Memorial Day to the last day of deer season (rifle).
