Wetlands, trees, birding and more: Blackwater Falls

Learn more about bogs, trees, birds and more at Blackwater Falls State Park July 24-26, 2023. Activities on Monday are about wetlands, Tuesday is Tree Day, and Wednesday begins with a bird walk. Things begin at the nature center unless posted otherwise. You’re invited and encouraged to visit our trails, the falls areas, the Nature Center, and Pendleton Lake.

MONDAY, July 24, 2023
Nature Center: 10:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.

Wading Into Wetlands Day
10:30 a.m. Wetland Walk
Meet at the Gentle Trail to walk a portion of Yellow Birch trail to a mountain bog. About 70 minutes. We’ll take our time. Wear good hiking/walking shoes. YPP

1:00 p.m. Hidden in the Wetland
In many freshwater areas there are certain plants and animals that call it home. Listen to the naturalist Kenny as he shares information about some of these plants and animals while you make a movable marsh scene. We’re indoors at the Nature Center. Casual and family friendly activity. About 1 hour. YPP

3:00 p.m. Beavers Nature Film
Let’s swim with Beavers and experience the rich aquatic habitat of one of nature’s greatest engineers. It is a film and you’re almost in their habitat when you’re watching. About 70 minutes. Free. YPP

4:30 p.m. Wetland Trivia
Test your knowledge of wetlands with this short Question and answer session. About 20 minutes. We make if fun! Come on to the nature center!. YPP

Trees, Leaves and Bark
11:00 a.m. Let’s learn Tree Identification
Join the naturalist for a beginners course into tree identification then practice our skills around the nature center About 1 hour. YPP

12:00 p.m. Tree Movie & Plaster of Paris Leaf Craft
Join the staff to create a leaf print. Drying time varies. YPP

1:00 p.m. Wax Melt Leaf Craft
Join the staff to create a colorful fall leaf to hang in your window.

WEDNESDAY, July 26, 2023
Nature Center: 10:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.

9:30 a.m. Birds at the Lake
Join the naturalist for a morning stroll along Pendleton Lake in search of feathered friends. This time of the morning is extra nice at the lake regardless if birds are twittering and skittering about. Good for any age. About 1/2 mile, 1hour. YPP
