AMERICAN CHESTNUT
2:00 p.m.
History and Future of the American Chestnut.
The American Chestnut once dominated the eastern United States forest and was a giant tree known as “The Redwood of the East.”

In 1905, a blight began in New York City killing the trees and by the late 1950s there was 100% mortality. This loss is one of the largest environmental disasters in the history of the United States. Surprisingly, old roots continue to grow but succumb to the blight before reaching maturity.

Enjoy this presentation by Sam Muncy, a master naturalist and West Virginia Chapter of The American Chestnut Foundation member. Program is about 1 hour long with time for questions answered and conversation about how to bring back a great monument tree. YPP
